HOW WE TALK

Do good water and bad water flow from the same spring? Of course not. (James 3:11 ERV)

Have you ever said, “I just know it” but were unable to explain why you knew? The truth is there are things that we sometimes know but do not totally understand how we know them. Like a mother will know when a child needs them or that something is wrong or right. We may pray about something and then feel our concern turn into comfort, not knowing why but knowing it all the same.

When we know something, we should talk it! Of course that talk should be right. If we talk according to what God says, we can always know that it is the right thing even when we do not totally understand. We may need to practice this for a time before we feel it, but as we do practice saying what He says, we learn to sense the comfort and confidence that goes along with it.

Respect for God’s Words is key to attaining the abundant life that Jesus came to give us. Children have a promise from God for a great life simply for honoring their mothers (and fathers). This involves respect based on what God says, not on any actions of the parents but because God said it. When we honor what He says and say what He says to say, we can be sure we will get His outcome.

The truth is that we have a sensor inside of us that tells us when we have said what we should say and what we should not have said. The more we correct what we should not have said, the less we will say those things. On the other hand if we dismiss those signals we will just keep saying those things and as we do we distance ourselves further and further from the outcome God has promised and desires for us.

So we must be convinced or willing to be convinced that God is right in all that He says. This will result in our following what we know even though we do not totally understand, trusting Him to bring understanding. This will bring us to the place of talking the talk that God enables us to talk. The Holy Spirit can accomplish what we cannot if we will yield to Him.

James was led to go to great lengths explaining the dangers of an out of control tongue. We read it. We know it is right. We know when we are wrong and need to do something about it. The problem is that we are slow to do what we know we need to do. There are just so many reasons and excuses for not taking charge of our own tongues. After all, James said no one can control it. He also said, “This should not happen!” So, do we continue to make excuses or do we do what we know is right?

Submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee from you. Out of respect for God, we need to do whatever we need to do in order to line up with this very important portion of scripture. We alone speak ourselves up or down. Speak up!
