HOW'S YOUR LOVE LIFE
And this expectation will not disappoint us. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love. (Romans 5:5 NLT)
This is a question that some will recognize as being asked in a very non-spiritual context in years past. Still, it is a very good question. If those of us who were caught up in the drugs, sex, and rock and roll mindset had looked deeper at the question, we would have seen something better sooner.
When this question was posed, the answer was based on what was being received. Sadly enough, when we put this question in a spiritual context, we find that we as Christians look at it the same way. I believe that God has put on my heart to look at this question from a giving perspective rather than a receiving one. God wants us to consider how we are giving love to others. After all, He has freely given us more love than we can comprehend.
There have been many times when I have heard people say that they just did not feel loved. I wonder how God feels when He hears say or even think these things. How can we not feel loved when He has given us so much love? How can we possibly feel slighted just because some person is not measuring up to what we want from them, when the creator of the universe loves us so much?
Somewhere, we need to come to the point that we can accept the fact that everything is not about us. In fact it really is never about us. It is about God and about others knowing God. Before we can be firmly established in this thinking we must first comprehend just how much God loves us. Of course we will never grasp it all this side of eternity, but if we will at least begin to comprehend the love of God, we will be less likely to fall into the devils trap of being so self centered.
No matter what is going on around us, we are loved. God gave us the Holy Spirit so that we could comprehend His love and so that we could spread that love around. So now, how is your love life? How have you loved others? Have you loved them based on how they have loved you? Have you been measuring your love out according to how you feel about things? Or, have you loved with reckless abandon because you feel so loved by God? Are you willing to love your way right through the times when the devil is tempting you to feel like nobody loves you or understands you and they certainly do not care about you. If or when you feel this way, just speak to yourself and say, “It is not about me!”
I was thinking this morning as I wrote our tithe and offering check about how much God gives for so little. We sow ten or twenty or whatever percent and He gives back overflowing blessings. Before we ever gave anything, He gave us everything. This is the kind of love God wants us to lavish on the world around us. There is no doubt that we are loved, the question is, “Are we loving?
