HUMAN WISDOM
I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One. (Proverbs 30:3 NLT)
Isn’t it interesting that the gifts that God has given us are the very things that often keep us from drawing closer to Him? God has given us wonderful minds, but very often our wonderful minds are what conjure up the thoughts that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God. We have the ability to believe if we want to, but unbelief often over rules what is best for us. And so we vacillate between God and self, knowing that there must be more to life. It is at this point that many people choose to come to Jesus.
It would surely be nice if there were never again a moment of confusion, but of course this is not the case. Often times the battle only intensifies. Then, instead of the decisions becoming easier there are always more thoughts to complicate matters. Just when we think we have hit a plateau, up pops another mountain and we have no choice but to climb. Experience tells us that if we don’t climb we will find ourselves rolling down the mountain out of control. The sad truth is if we are bound up with only human wisdom, we can plan on regular meetings with despair. However, if we give ourselves over to knowledge of the Holy One, we will always have a remedy for that despair. We will learn that it is much easier to pray than it is to worry, because we will more clearly see that prayer helps and worry hurts. You see, in our natural minds we know that worrying never changes anything. You can ask people who do not even believe in God and they can tell you that worrying will do no good. I fear that the sad truth is that Christians are just as guilty of worrying as those who don’t even know God. I also believe that God is on a mission to change this.
When Jesus walked this earth He performed miracle after miracle revealing the power of prayer and God’s willingness to answer prayer. The Bible tells us that still most did not believe in Him. Then He sent the disciples out and gave them power so they would see how God would confirm His word. In the end, they deserted Him. Then Jesus came back from the dead and revealed Himself to them. After a time they all believed it was really Him, and then He went up into the clouds. Before he left He told them that they needed to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, and so they went and waited. We do not know how many started out waiting for the power, but we know that there were 120 there when the Holy Spirit came.
After they were empowered, they changed the world. The Bible tells us that Jesus kept working with them confirming the word of God. And so here we are two thousand years later and God is more interested than ever in confirming His word and releasing His power. More and more we are seeing it and more and more we are seeing the devil try everything he can to stop it. Christians need to quit focusing so much on what the devil is doing and more time declaring what God can do to overcome it. Jesus never got bogged down in the evil around Him. He just kept doing good and overcoming the power of the enemy. It is not so important that we master human wisdom, it is more important that we know the Holy One and His wisdom. Does that make sense to you?
