HUNGER

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. (Matt. 5:6)

There is something about hunger that can pretty much take over our thinking. I can get busy and not think about food for a long period of time, but once hunger gets my attention it has my full attention. This is even more the case if I am fasting. You know how it is when you decide even to cut down on a particular food, that is the only one you can think about at first. Do you ever crave a certain food or treat? There are things that I very seldom eat, but then all of a sudden that becomes the only thing that I want.

When we consider this, it becomes very clear why God tells us that the key to His fullness is to hunger and thirst after Him. He is righteousness. I used to always read this as trying to be and do the right things, but that would be works. If we were to get filled because we were good enough, we could take credit for it ourselves. No, He is telling us to hunger and thirst after Him and we will find fullness like we never could have imagined.

Just like certain foods, we have to develop a taste for God! He did say to taste and see that the Lord is good. We are told continually what is good for us and what is not. Of course what we learn at one time is good for us may later change. We tell children to eat things because they are good for them. It is most important that we establish in our minds that God is always good. Knowing this, we can then determine in our hearts to do whatever we must to develop a taste for him.

As we develop this taste for God, we will find ourselves from time to time craving Him. We will find our thoughts turning toward Him more and more. Just like a person might alter their route to and from work so they can drive by the place they like to get their coffee or a certain treat, we may find ourselves altering our route to satisfy our need for God.

The more we yield to the craving for God the more our hunger will increase, until He is no longer just an occasional craving but rather we find ourselves hungry for Him all the time. If we will continue to follow this course we will arrive at the place where our thoughts are always turning to him. We just will not be able to quit thinking about Him and His promises. Just like we are certain the refrigerator is calling our name when we walk by it, we will be certain that we heard the Lord calling us.

This kind of hunger will satisfy us when we wake in the night. It will satisfy us when sickness attacks. This kind of hunger will provide answers to finances and fears. Yes there is a very good reason that God tells us to hunger and thirst after Him. Only He can satisfy the longing in our souls. Only He can provide peace that passes understanding. Only He can supply our every need. Only He can protect and direct our every step so that all is well. Do you feel hunger rising?
