HUNGER BRINGS FULLNESS

With great power the apostles were making it known to everyone that the Lord Jesus was raised from death. And God blessed all the believers very much. (Acts 4:33 ERV)

Hunger brings fullness, but what brings hunger? Jesus said that great blessing belong to those who hunger and thirst for what is right. He said they would be filled. Jesus also said that we were blessed because it had been given to us to understand. God said, “Open your mouth and I will fill it.”

All of these thoughts stir me for more of God, but there was a time when they meant nothing to me. What produces hunger? I am so thankful to be hungry, but I wonder if I am hungry enough! As I thought of this I had mental picture of many things floating around in my mind and God asked me if I noticed the one thought that was always floating with the others. That thought was to turn to God. I realized that no matter how distracted I may get or what direction I might be taking; it was almost always that thought of seeking God that got my attention. I also realized that if ever I found myself pushing that thought away I would be in grave danger like a person drowning who pushes the rescue person away.

In the midst of this, I have been overwhelmed by two things. I have been overwhelmed by the realization of the lack of hunger in the world and even in the church. I feel so helpless to help people who have no hunger and at the same time driven to hunger myself and help others to develop even more hunger.

This scripture says that great power was making it clear that Jesus was raised from the dead. We know that power does have an effect, but we also know that we can have a powerful experience and then allow it and the memory of it to drift away. I think that those who hungered and were blessed very much were the ones who stood strong. I also think that the goodness of God attracted others. Still, there is that issue of hunger.

Advertisers spend huge amounts of money to get people to try their products. They are in effect trying to produce hunger. I wonder how many people buy food on impulse because of what the exhaust fans are advertising. I know that there have been many times when I had no thoughts of food and smelled the aroma and suddenly needed a burger. In the same way, hunger for God can just spring up in unexpected places.

God said to taste and see that the Lord is good. I also often say that I am feeding my taste buds. When something tastes good I can usually stand more. How many people do you know who say, “There is always room for ice cream?” Then there are those times when my bride will ask me what I am hungry for. I am seldom much help in making the decision as to what we should have, but by the time it is made, it is what I am hungry for. The most important taste we can develop is a taste and hunger for God. In so many words, the Lord Himself said, “Try it you will like it.” Are you hungry for God?
