I KNOW HIM
Jesus answered, "If I am merely boasting about myself, it doesn't count. But it is my Father who says these glorious things about me. You say, --'He is our God,' but you do not even know Him. I know Him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But it is true--I know Him and obey Him." (John 8:54, 55 NLT)
It takes time and effort to really get to know someone. It is always a mistake to form opinions concerning someone based on what others have said. We should always form our opinions based on what the truth really is. Let’s face it, sometimes an opinion is based simply on the fact that someone did not do just what someone else wanted them to do, and whether it was the right thing to do does not matter.
I don’t know about you, but I am tired of feeling foolish because I jumped to a conclusion. We all need to realize that people have their reasons for the things they do and say and it may be worth our while to take the time to understand them. Besides, even if they are totally wrong, Jesus said to bless those who curse you, pray for those who tick you off (my words) and love those that hate you etc. Just think of what it may be costing us when we don’t do these things.
Obviously, the most important thing of all is that we know God. We should not base what we believe on what other people know. We should consider and learn from others, but ultimately we need to know ourselves. We should base what God will do on what God says, not on what someone else thinks, unless of course they think what God says!
If we say that we know God, then our words and actions should line up. What if Jesus spent all of His time declaring how hard His life was? What if Jesus had said that He sure hoped God would raise Him from the dead? What if He had told us we could ask for anything, but don’t count on God doing what He says all the time? What if Jesus had said, “Trust God, it is better than nothing?”
Personally, I like the fact that Jesus always knew He was always in control. Even when they were going to kill Him, He let them know it was only because he was allowing it! He encourages us to have such confidence in Him that if someone wanted our coat we could give them the rest of our clothes as well and trust Him to handle the rest.
When other people are talking doubt, lack, tough times, and gloom, we should be saying we would feel the same way if it were not for the fact that we know God. For us to say anything else makes us a liar. Either we are lying about knowing God, or we are lying in what we are saying. For me to say I just do not know what to do is a lie! I always know what to do. I may not always do it, but that is going to change too. I always know that I should ask God. I always know that I should say and do what God says. I do know Him, and I am determined to know Him more. How about you?
