I WILL

I will sing of your love and justice. I will praise you, Lord, with songs. (Psalm 101:1)

When I read this psalm it makes me even more aware of a need for total dependence upon God. Singing and praising God is easy. He is so good I cannot help but worship Him. It is the rest of the “I will’s” that bring me to my knees. As much as I want to live a blameless life, I know that I am not up to the task in my own strength. And even with the Lord’s great strength at my disposal, I know that I fall short of that goal. I will not give up on getting there, but I find myself in the same dilemma that Paul spoke of. I do the very things that I do not want to do, and do not always do what I intend to do.

For instance, have you ever looked forward with joy to seeing someone, imagining a wonderful reunion, but when you actually got there you blew it because something was not just the way you expected it to be. I have at times even prepared for roadblocks to a joyous meeting, only to do exactly what I planned not to do. God help me to live a blameless life! David knew what he was doing when he immediately asked God when he was going to come to his aid.

He goes on to say, “I will live a life of integrity in my own home.” Let’s face it; this is the place that we miss the mark the most. In the refuge of our own home is the place that we must hone in our life of integrity. If we don’t, we might as well add hypocrite to our name. You know, they did not have television when David penned this, but still he was declaring that he would not view anything vile or vulgar. You have to be quick in this day an age to miss those things with a television in the room. David on the other hand would only need to stay off his balcony at bath time! Truly, we must fight the good fight of faith. Our chair in front of the television may just be our balcony.

Keeping the declarations of this Psalm are truly impossible without Christ. People who think that can are fooling themselves. Christians who think they can without total dependence on Him are the greatest fools of all. We can hate crooked dealings, but we have to admit that if there is a way to rationalize it and it is to our benefit, we are tempted! Once one of my children told me that the devil tried to get them to steal a candy bar, but they resisted.

If we do not determine in our hearts to live a life of integrity and ask the Lord to come to our aid, we will lose more than we win. Don’t forget, the devil wants to destroy us all. Compromise is one of his greatest weapons. Just look at David’s story and see what compromise cost him. Then look at Joseph’s life and see what refusing to compromise did for him. Yes there were some struggles, but God gave him favor in the midst of all of them. David on the other hand, even though he was a man after God’s own heart, saw much misery and destruction all around him. His own children trying to kill him, sleep with his wives, and cheat the very people he loved. Read this psalm and ask God to help make this your testimony. This is my desire. Lord, please help!
