I WILL DO IT

If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it. (John 14:14 ERV)

We may as well deal with the truth that sets men free. If we do not; we will never be free to see or to enjoy the Lord to the extent that He desires. After all, He says that He wants our joy to be full. He wants us to be completely happy. If there is a verse in the Bible that plays with our lids, this may be the biggest one. What was Jesus thinking when he told us that He would do anything we asked?

Earlier, we talked about the importance of being open to the truth; keeping the lid off so that God could pour into us. Then we discussed the fact that Christ in His death and resurrection opened the way for the things of God to flow freely through Him. He opens the valve and the valve is not shut. Just as nothing can separate us from the truth of His love, neither can anything separate us from the truth of the rest of His Word. So, if we can remove the lid that immediately comes out of our pocket when we read this scripture, we will be well on our way to the truth that sets us free.

We read this verse and we back away. We think about prayers that have not been answered. We want to put restrictions on the flow of God. We would like to believe that He meant what He said but we have seen too many things that contradict it. We live in a fallen world that screams at the suggestion of the truth of the Kingdom of God. But within us dwells the Spirit of God and if we will believe Him, we can resist the resistance and allow Him to trickle in.

We need to learn to quit rationalizing the truth away and instead argue for it. Why shouldn’t the Word of God work for us the way that Jesus said it would. Why wouldn’t God be true to His word? Why not me?

What would happen if we did the same thing with our excuses, the lids that keep truth out, as Jesus did with the lid that held back the free flow of God? What if we just went ahead and believed? What if we not only believed, but expected God to do what He has promised.

This was what Jesus was showing us through His entire ministry. He said that He did what His Father showed Him and said what His Father said. When He said it, He expected it to happen. In the same way He expected His followers to believe it worked that way. When He sent them out, they found out that it worked just as He said. So it only stood to reason that they would believe it would continue to work. That was a little harder to get through to them, but when Holy Spirit came and convinced them they were ready. The same Holy Spirit is here to convince us. Can we be convinced?

If we spent as much time believing that God cannot lie as we did rationalizing why this verse may not work, I believe we would find ourselves living with much higher expectations and being more and more amazed at just how true it is.
