ICE CREAM AND GOD
Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. (Psalm 34:8)
My heart was touched, a little pierced, convicted, and challenged as I considered tasting and seeing that the Lord is good. It seems to me that tasting is ok, but that is not necessarily where we are supposed to stop, and yet we often do.
I like ice cream, perhaps more than I should, but I like it. I don’t remember ever dreaming about it, but all the same I like it. If someone mentions dessert, my thought is that ice cream must be part of it. I can live without it and I often do, but I do like ice cream! So, what does ice cream have to do with God?
Even though I like Ice cream, I seldom take time to enjoy it. I simply eat it. If all we do is taste and see that the Lord is good, we are treating Him like a favorite food. We taste and we move on. We do nothing with the idea of taking refuge in Him.
I love God. I sing to God. I praise and worship God. I think of Him way more often than I think of ice cream and yet I often do all of that the same way I eat. I just eat and at times I may not even taste. My largest pause comes if I discover a bone, a different texture, or maybe hair. Sorry if that caused you discomfort! An extra good and different taste will slow things down.
There are also times when I eat until I have eaten too much just because it tastes good. I don’t like to do that with food, but I do love getting full of God. We can get full of God any time, all the time, but do we? We need only to enter in.
I have heard people speak of longing for those times when God moved in some special way. God is always special. The taste is intended to bring us to the feast, not just taste a go. I wish I could say that I always get all I should out of my time with God. Sometimes, I get more than I planned. Sometimes I get stalled in the first few moments and just stay there with God. I start to write in my journal and all I can put down is Lord.
Those are the refuge times. Those are times when I enjoy the flavor of God. There is nothing better than God.
We all have different food preferences, and we all have foods that we do not even like the thought of. That is fine when it comes to food. But when it comes to God, let’s get beyond ourselves and into His presence.
There was a song when I was kid that said, “Take time to be holy.” Slow down. Savor the presence of God. Think about how great He is. Think about all that He has done for us. Fill up until you cannot move away from the table. That is what we were made to do. Enjoy the feast.
