IDOLS
Some people pour out their silver and gold, and hire a craftsman to make a god from it. Then they bow down and worship it! The Land is full of idols. The people bow down and worship these things they have made.(Isaiah 46:6 Isaiah 2:8 NLT)
How we hate to acknowledge Idols in our lives. I suppose it is because we hate to admit that we would put anything before God. After all, we are Christians, and we know that He is supposed to be at the top of the list. We also know that at times He barely makes our top 10. We have so many things in our lives that are racing to get to the front of the line, that we forget to consider that God is the answer to all those other things.
In Isaiah chapter two, the people are told of a great day that is coming when word of God and His teaching will go out from Jerusalem. That means there will be a day, when people are wanting it. International disputes will be settled and wars will cease. The sad truth is, that day is any day that we will yield to God and His word. So why doesn’t the world just get it right? Probably because they are waiting to see the church get it right. They are waiting for us to show them that the Word of God really works.
In the mean time, they will continue to bow down to the idols that control the world. Money, power, immorality, and etc. Sad to say, there are large percentage of professing Christians bow to the same idols. They say the divorce rate is just as great in the church as in the world. I recently heard that the percentage of Christians hooked on pornography over the Internet is staggering.
It is really not so surprising when we consider that we are the prime targets of the enemy. It is just sad that we are such easy pray. Part of that may be because we are too busy with our own agendas to take the time to enlist the power of God in order to overcome the wiles of the devil.
God said that if we would seek first His kingdom and His righteousness that all the other things would be added to us. It stands to reason then that this same plan would keep evil from us. Scripture tells us to be reconciled to God, but we spend more time trying to get God to reconcile His ways so that they fit in with what we plan to do.
We have more self help books for Christianity that the world ever thought of having. We have formulas and ideas that have become idols that we bow down too. We treat God at times, like He is one of those Gods that we are trying appease with our sacrifices of the flesh, when He has already told us that He does not want that. He just wants a broken spirit and a contrite heart.
It is time we quit trying to figure a way to do it on our own and simply do what God has called us to do. God certainly puts up with a lot from us, but what He really wants is us. Just us. If we will give ourselves to Him, He can fix it all. Let’s make a covenant with God to bow to only Him, and make Him our only idol.
