IF YOU ARE WISE

If you are wise and understand God's ways, live a life of steady goodness so that only good deeds will pour forth. (James 3:13 NLT)

Most everyone considers themselves to be wise in some area or another, but the truth is that real wisdom comes from only one place and that is from God. God’s wisdom is the only thing that will last for eternity. And since God knows about everything, it stands to reason that we should seek Him for wisdom concerning our lives now and forever.

Isn’t it interesting the James leads into telling us about what we will do if we are wise, by telling us of the importance of controlling our tongues? Tongue control and wisdom must go together! If we do, it would seem that we will live a life of steady goodness and our lives will produce a steady stream of good deeds. When I think of this, I think of Jesus. He was our example as he walked this earth. He revealed to us how a person anointed with the Holy Spirit could and should live their life.

Jesus most certainly controlled His tongue. He said that He only said what He heard the Father say. As a result, his life was one of steady goodness. Just look at how lives were changed by his goodness. By His words, that were always spoken perfectly, He always accomplished the will of God. He asked the blind man what he wanted and then gave him what He asked for. It was God’s goodness that caused him to ask and the result was a good deed. God’s goodness causes us to take time for those who are blind.

Jesus also spoke on behalf of a woman caught in adultery. He stood up for this person caught in terrible sin. Not only did he defend her, He forgave her and sent her on her way. He asked a paralyzed man if he would like to be healed and then he healed him. He called one tax collector to follow him and called another down from a tree and changed both of their lives forever.

Jesus met the woman at the well and asked her for a drink. She could hardly believe he would even talk to her. He did more than that. After He had told her everything she wanted to know plus some things about her, she ran and told everyone He was the Messiah. If you have read the bible, you can add many things to this list. It would benefit us all to study Jesus life more. It truly flows with goodness.

The key in this is that Jesus sought God and spoke the truth. He made it a point to bless and help people. His words were perfectly fitted for every situation. Sometimes they sounded harsh when he addressed the religious leaders who did not care about people only their positions, but still His words afforded them the opportunity to find the life that Jesus came to give them.

If we are wise, we will seek to walk and talk the way that Jesus did. Wouldn’t it be nice to see steady goodness and a flow of good deeds in our lives, instead of being up and down and frustrated with our walk with God?
