IF YOU ONLY KNEW
"If you only knew the gift that God has for you and who I am, you would ask Me, and I would give you living water." (John 4:10 NLT)
Let’s face it, when it comes to knowing the gifts that God has for us we are at best elementary students. The greatest of teachers and preachers would have to admit that they have only begun to touch the tip of what God can, will, and desires to do for us and through us. Jesus had the clearest picture of it, and because of that He told the disciples that they would do all He had done and even greater things because He went to be with His Father. How many people really act like they believe that statement?
The truth is, if we really knew the gifts that God has for us, then we would never doubt for even a moment. We would be unshakable in our confidence that nothing is impossible with God. Do we really even begin to understand God’s promise of eternal life? I think that the majority of people who classify themselves as believers see eternal life as something to be experienced only after we are gone from this world. The truth is, eternal life begins with salvation. It is at that point that God wants us begin to experience the fullest earthly measure of His kingdom and favor.
In this passage of Scripture, Jesus asked a Samaritan woman for a drink. She responded by asking why he was talking to her. After all, they were socially incompatible! Jesus answer to her question was that if she only knew the truth, she would not get hung up on what society dictated. Since she did not know, she limited herself to only what she could comprehend in the natural realm. Jesus wanted to move her into understanding the super natural. So He told her God had something for her and that He could help her get it.
Don’t we do the same thing more often than we would care to admit? Because we either have no idea or we forget all that God has for us, we limit ourselves to our own understanding. For instance, we have been in need of rain in our area for quite some time. Now when rain comes, the response of a majority of the people is one of doubt and even complaining. They say it won’t last long enough or it probably will not be enough to do any good now any way. I asked one person if the people were out dancing and praising God for the rain, and they said they did not want to do something that would jinx it. They obviously do not understand the gifts that God has for them, or what praise does.
As much as we all would like to think that maybe God does have something for us, the truth is that we all see Him as being much smaller, much meaner, and a lot less generous than He really is. Jesus was trying to get this woman to see outside of her box of understanding. He is trying to get us to do the same. Just try to imagine the gift that God has for you. Whatever you need, spiritually, physically, emotionally, financially, and etc. Just dare to imagine the gift that God has ready when you call. Don’t limit Him. Ask!
