IMITATORS

Therefore be imitators of God, as dear children. (Ephesians 5:1 NKJV)

How in the world can we imitate God? If we really think about this without a lot of outside clutter, it is not such an impossible task. Little children have no problem imitating and we should not either!

For several days, the Lord has directed me to read this chapter in the book of Ephesians, and as I have read He has been showing me some things that tie together in my mind a bit of what He is teaching here. Over the next few devotions we will explore them.

To begin with, think about what God has shown us. Though we have not seen the Father, Jesus said, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” Well we have not actually seen Jesus in person like the disciples, but He has been revealed to us through His Word by the Holy Spirit. In other words, we have seen more than enough to imitate.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now I do not know if there is a gap in the time frame, but we do know that He spoke the worlds into existence. So if He did it once and then it went dark and void, He simply repeated the process. In other words; He spoke and things happened. So part of imitating God would be speaking things into being. I am not talking about us creating things from nothing like God did, but still the power of life and death are in the tongue, so that what is not can be if we will believe and speak.

Just as a little child imitates, so can we imitate God. Have you ever watched a little child tell a dog the same things an adult or owner tells the dog? They simply observe what the adult did and repeat it. Those children expect the dog to do the same thing for them that they did for the adult. Often times, it works! If the dog does not respond right away, the owner is usually thinking that the child is so cute that they reinforce the command so that the dog does in fact do what the child said. Can you see a spiritual picture here? Simple childlike faith is what God encourages us to walk in. If we do I believe He is quite ready to reinforce our obedience by watching over His word to perform it.

God is love, so we can love. God forgives, so we can forgive. God gave us mercy and took our sin. God gave us healing and took our diseases. God gave joy and took our sorrow.

Yes we can imitate God. Next time we will talk more about how God ties these things together in a wonderful package. Only natural thinking can complicate the simplicity that is in Christ. Therefore be imitators of God, as dear children.
