IN CHRIST JESUS
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1 NKJ)
I don’t know about you, but I do know a bit about me. And what I know is that I do not always walk according to the Spirit. This scripture tells me that there is no condemnation when I am walking in the spirit, but what about when I am not? As I prayed about this, my mind wandered. Does your mind ever wander when you pray? Well when I got done wandering, I came back and told the Lord I was sorry. I said, “Lord you are always in my thoughts, even when my mind wanders. I am thankful that the Holy Spirit brings me back to you.”
Then it hit me! When condemnation comes, and it will come, the key is to get in Christ Jesus. Run to Him, Praise Him, cry to Him, do anything, but just get there. When we come to Him for salvation, we ask Him to come into us. We ask that He fill us with His Holy Spirit and change our lives. When we ask, He comes. Christ in us is our hope not only in glory but all the time. He is our blessed Hope. He is the way the truth and the life.
Previously I saw this verse and being a real comfort for those in Christ, and an encouragement for people who did not know Him, but what about those of us who know Him and have the Holy Spirit guiding us? How can we be excused for walking according to the flesh? Don’t look for excuses! If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us. What happens when we are forgiven? We are in Christ Jesus, and the condemnation is defeated!
I believe it was the Beach Boys who had a song that said there was a place where they could go and tell their secrets too. “In my room,” they said. Well there is a place that we can go all the time and that is, “in Christ.” He came to us when we called on Him for salvation, and now He tells us to come to Him.
It is not just the lost of the world that need to come to Jesus. I know that I will often say of someone who is quite obviously lost, “oh they need Jesus.” It is true that they do, but it is also true that no one needs Him more than I do. As Christians we can get busy with what we see as important to reaching the world and forget how important it is keep ourselves in the love of God.
I believe that is why we have so many powerless and defeated Christians running around. We rightly want to see everyone come to know Jesus, but we are forgetting the need to show Jesus. We can’t show Him if we are not in Him. What a privilege to know that we can always run to Him knowing He is running much faster toward us.
So never stay discouraged or condemned. Yes those things will come at us, but we know a place, a person where we can go. When we go to Jesus, those things have no place in us. We are transformed from discouraged and condemned, to encouraged and confident.
