IN THE SHADOW
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
(Psalm 91:1 NLT)
Have you ever awakened in the night full of fear? Have you ever had one of your children cry out to you in the night and told them to go back to sleep; that everything was all right because you were right there in the house with them. Then the next thing you know they are right there at your bed side because just being in the house is not close enough for them.
Well, this is somewhat of the picture I received as I read the 91st Psalm. You know a lot of people are in the house but not experiencing the peace God promises. The peace we all desire is found only in the shadow of the All Mighty.
We have to get closer and closer to Him. The Lord by His Spirit is continually calling us to come closer. In the shadow is where we get the assurance that He alone is our refuge. Just like the child who knows you are in the next room but wants to be right next to you in order feel really safe, it is the same in our relationship to God. It is not enough just to be in the house or even in the family. In order know Him as the only place of safety and to truly trust Him first in all things, we must get in His shadow. Then we feel the safety and are confident to trust Him no matter what.
When we are in His shadow are certain that our rescue is eminent, no matter what may have us trapped. We can, by faith, feel His wings about us, and see His promises as strong armor around us. We can claim His promises as though He were whispering them in our ear even as they come from our mouths.
In verse 9, the Lord says that if we make the Lord our refuge and the Most High our shelter, no evil will conquer us. He does not say that evil will stay completely away from us all the time, but He assures us that we will not be conquered.
In His shadow we can we can almost hear Him giving the orders to the angels for our protection and provision. They have instruction to hold us in their hands. How many testimonies have you heard from people who have experienced that?
Once, I saw one of my children disappear backwards down a flight of stairs, and then just as quickly I saw him come forward as though someone behind him caught him and stood him back up. The only catch was that no one was there. It was an angel who held him up. If you think about it I am sure you could remember many times in your life where you knew something or someone did something to help you, but you could not explain it. Well just look at the 91st Psalm and give the glory to God for the great things He has done. Make it your goal to get into the shadow of the Almighty. Stay close. Feel the presence of God.
