INTEREST RATES
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope. (Psalm 130:5 NKJV)
I realize that this is peculiar heading for a devotion, but bear with me and let’s see what the Lord can show us. The interest rate that a bank or fund or any investment offers is somewhat of a reflection of just how interested they are in having your money. If someone offers a large amount, they are very interested and a tiny amount implies that they are not that interested, or perhaps that they just do not want to offer any value.
So what is our interest rate in the Word of God? How interested are we really? The Psalmist declares that he waits for the Lord and that his hope is in the Word of the Lord. He goes on to say that he hopes more in the Lord than he does in waking up in the morning. Seems to me that he is interested in what God has to say.
There are many things in life that are interesting and we all have different things that we are most interested in. For instance, I find golf interesting and I like to watch it when Tiger is playing. I am not interested enough in it to actually play it, and even when I am watching it, I am often required to change the channel because others in the house do not have any interest in it. If my interest level was high, I would not change the channel and I would probably be out playing the game.
In the same way, many people find the gospel interesting. They may or may not read the Bible on a regular basis but all the same it is interesting. Others interest may go to the point of occasionally attending church, but not allow it to be a real focus of life. Then there are those who may attend church and fellowship regularly, but the depth of their interest ends at the door when they leave.
When the thought of interest rates first popped into my head, the scripture that quickly followed was Jesus saying, “If you can believe; all things are possible to them that believe.” In a way, Jesus was saying to the man, “Just in case you are interested, all things are possible with Me.”
You see, the more interested we are in something the deeper we go into it. Someone may find hunting or fishing interesting and may go out on occasion. Others are seriously interested in it. They live from one season to another just to go out. They watch it, study it, practice it, and rejoice when they can do it again.
Wow, that sounds like a good level of interest. We can live from one moment with God to the next. We can study His patterns for living and His rewards. We can practice His presence and rejoice at every opportunity to draw near to Him. This says to God that we want what He has to offer.
Open your arms wide and ask God to make a large deposit in your account today. His interest in you is enormous. What is your interest rate?
