IT IS WHAT IT IS
God's Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways. (Galatians 5:22-23 CEV)
God’s Spirit produces God in us. His fruit is Him. It is what He is. His fruit is not shined up to look good on the outside only. His fruit is good through and through, and He dwells in us. Taking this into consideration should help us to realize that in order not to be what God promises we have to resist God’s Spirit. Just as cooperating with God’s Spirit increases our confidence, so it is that resisting God’s Spirit puts us on a slippery slope.
For example, if we find ourselves loving when we would not in the natural love, we will probably not only be amazed at what God can do, but we will also experience a sense of happiness. On the other hand, if we fail to love when we know we should we open the door to the loss of happiness, which leaves us anything but peaceful, and with no peace there is lack of patience. At that point we can kiss kindness goodbye and well you can figure out the rest of where things are headed.
In our flesh, we can pretend to do what we know the Word of God says, but we cannot be real in our own strength. As God says, we can be sure our sin will find us out. If we tell someone we love them to their face and talk about them behind their back it is obvious that something rotten is under the polished outside. When we do such things, if we fail to recognize it or worse yet try to justify it, we are headed toward what is known as a seared conscience. It good to sear meat to keep the flavor in but it is not so good to sear our conscience and keep the wrong things in.
As I prayed today I told the Lord that I just wanted to build my relationship with Him. I did not want to miss anything He wanted me to do, but I also did not want to do stuff that would hinder my relationship with Him. Well that opened the door to a whole new thought about how important it is to keep building relationships. In today’s social networking people post for the world to see if they are in a relationship or not! As I thought about that, I saw a multitude of ways that this applied to my life and wondered if this was what God wanted for today.
You see, I had somehow moved from building my relationship with God to seeing what He wanted me to share today. So at this point, He said, “Maybe I am giving you nothing to share!” Upon hearing that I immediately thought, “Well then, we will just worship and minister to the Lord today; I can handle that!” Immediately one of my ears began to ring, and the Lord said, “This is a test!” It was a moment for a chuckle as I also sensed it was like one of those test moments that comes on the TV. Yes, God and I have some good laughs at times!
God was not ready for me to move away from what His Spirit does in me (us). Needless to say, the things that God’s Spirit produces in us are key to any relationship, but before we go anywhere, we must make sure our relationship with God is what it should be as we strive for all that it can be. We do this knowing that we will never get to the end of the greatness of it in this life but we continue to press toward the mark for that prize. We must walk in agreement with the Holy Spirit. We know that. The question is; are we doing it?
