IT'S WORTH THE EFFORT
Since God chose you to be the Holy people whom He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12 NLT)
Have you ever gone anywhere you really did not want to go or done something you really preferred not to do, just because someone asked and you did not want to disappoint them? We have all done that and as a rule it did not hurt us that bad, and in the end it was the right thing to do. There are of course exceptions to that but I think you get the picture. It turned out to be worth the effort.
Well, doing what God wants is worth the effort too. Most of those other things we do are pretty temporary, but the things God asks of us have present as well as eternal benefits. In fact, doing what He says in this scripture will help us to do those other things with the right attitude and motive.
Since He has chosen us to be people who are set apart for Him, He wants us to make sure that we put on the things that reveal Him. It often takes a lot of effort. Let’s be honest, sometimes we just don’t feel like doing what we know God prefers. Sometimes we think it feels better to just let our flesh rule our actions. The only problem is that when we do that we usually regret it and the cost is far more than we anticipated.
How many times have you misplaced something and spent way too much time looking for it? The whole time you were doing it you were telling yourself to just forget it, but you keep looking. Sometimes we quit looking two or three times because it drives us crazy not to be able to find what we are looking for. Why don’t we put that much time and effort into following what God says and finding what He wants.
Another thought would be how much time we spend to look good on the outside. We stand before the mirror to primp. We ponder in our closets for the just the right clothes. In my case, I will put on something and then look at it and think there is no way that Vikki is going like how this goes together. So then it is back to the closet to find something that will work. Seems to me that I would be wise to take a look at what I am about to do or say and make at least that much effort to make sure it works according what God wants.
God never said that it would always be easy to do things according to His Word; He just made it clear that it would be beneficial. When we do things His way, we open the windows of heaven. When we do things His way, we reveal His glory and people are drawn to Him. After all, it is not all about us! It is all about Jesus. His will and ways are able to save us in every circumstance. It is worth the effort to clothe ourselves according to His standards, especially if it will shine the light for even one person who is now in darkness and draw them to the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. People are watching; it is worth the effort to put on Christ. That is wise living.
