JESUS
A certain immoral woman heard He was there and brought a beautiful jar filled with expensive perfume. Then she knelt behind him at His feet, weeping. Her tears fell on His feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing His feet and putting perfume on them.(Luke 7:37-38 NLT)
Have you ever considered what it was that caused this woman to come crying and washing Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume? According to this account, Jesus had not yet done anything for her. She heard He was there and this is how she approached Him. Please allow me to consider some possibilities with you.
Perhaps she was in the crowd one day and felt something as He passed by. Could it be that she experienced a moments peace from the things that tormented her. Or had she seen someone else, a friend perhaps whose life had been changed by this man Jesus. What ever it was, when she heard where He could be found she went there with a purpose. Then again, we really should not overlook the fact that this party was hosted by the very Pharisee that knew what kind of woman this was. Was she a regular at his parties, or was she hired to try and entice Jesus into sin. It would take a long time to cover all of these issues, so let’s just look at what happened when she did get near Jesus.
She began to weep and to wash his feet with her tears. That takes a lot of tears! Did His presence break her heart over her sinfulness? That was part of it I am sure. But perhaps it was the presence of His pure love that she could not get over. Here was a man that had no sin, and yet condemned her not. Suddenly, in His presence, the demons that tormented her had to stop.
Perhaps she was experiencing Isaiah Chapter 9. She was in the presence of the wonderful counselor. Others had probably counseled her in a lot different directions, but now in His presence it was not so much what she had to do, but what He could do for her. There were no harsh words, there was no condemnation. The more she loved Him, the more the Love of God flowed toward her. She could feel it.
She was in the presence of Mighty God. How else could she have such peace. She obviously spent time around the Pharisees, but they did nothing for her, they mostly did things to her and took away her dignity. Here was an everlasting father. One who accepted her and gave her the power to triumph over the spirits that tormented her. This was truly the Prince of Peace. She had never felt such peace.
And so her tears of sorrow and of joy flowed, and she was overcome with desire to give something in return, and so she gave the best she had. She anointed His feet with expensive perfume. The aroma filled the place and everyone looked, but she had nothing to be ashamed of any longer, she was changed. Without a word, she was changed! And Jesus gave a testimony of her change. Then he told her that her sins were forgiven. He told them that He knew she had many sins, and because that she loved Him much. Then He told her that her faith had saved her and to go in peace. Jesus gives us peace. A peace that is ours to keep. What ever it was that brought that woman that night, there is no doubt that she was changed forever. Jesus does that again and again for all of us. We simply need to sit at His feet.
