JUST ONCE
For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:19 NLT)
There a lot of just once moments in all of our lives. How many times have we said or heard someone say, “Just once I wish you would listen to me?” Or how many times have we wanted to just be able to do something one more time or have an opportunity to redo things or undo things or any one of a long list of “just once” moments or thoughts? I believe we all can see a picture here and come up with many of our own scenarios.
This scripture reminds us that it only took one time for Him to accomplish something that would continue to be a blessing to the world for all eternity. Jesus was of course obedient for His entire life. He said that He always did what the Father wanted. Not even once did He miss that mark. Not even once did He sin. However, this particular act of obedience was the biggest and the best for all time and resulted in an open door to righteousness for all of mankind!
There are so many things and so many opportunities in our lives where once is more than enough. We have no idea how one righteous (God based) act can change a person’s life, or how one ungodly act can do the same.
Think of the people who did something just once and it had long term consequences. There is the person who drove drunk just once and had an accident, or the person who tried drugs just one time and died as a result. We often fail to think about how much just once can hurt us or help us. Of course obedience to God is the most important thing, but we need to remember that what is right is what is right and what is wrong is what is wrong. All good and perfect things belong to God, and so doing what is right belongs to Him.
I personally had a long list of what was not right in my life leading up to the time that I did the most right thing I ever did. I obeyed God and received Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior. It only took once and He took me in. That is a just once moment that every single person needs to experience. It is the only thing that really matters. From there, it is simply a matter of following the Lord and continuing in that same path. Without that one act of obedience, we can only continue to wander along a maze of other paths that sometimes seem right and sometimes seem wrong and they all lead to dead ends!
Each and every person who has come to know the Truth should be very thankful and should allow that thankfulness to overflow into the world around them. If just once we will stop making excuses as to why we cannot make a difference in the lives of others and go ahead and do what the Lord calls us to do and trust Him for the harvest, we will break the yoke that keeps us from doing and being all that God has enabled us to do and be. Only God and Christ knew for sure what His one-time act of obedience would accomplish, but they did it anyway! We can be sure that God has set us up for success in all things. It only takes one step to get things moving in the right direction.
