JUST TRUST
At once, Jesus reached out his hand. He helped Peter up and said, “You surely don’t have much faith. Why do you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31 CEV)
What a great question; why do we doubt? When we pray Jesus told us to remember who we pray to. We pray to our Father the creator of heaven and earth. When we do, we ask for His Kingdom to come and His will be done. Everything after that are, well, things we prefer, or people we are worried about, or things someone told us we should worry about, or just about anything but trust.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to tell anyone how to pray; I am just trying to relieve some of the stress and pressure. Peter could have had a great walk if he kept going with the same confidence he started with when he got out of the boat! It still ended up pretty great and it gives us all confidence that Jesus is always there for us.
A long time ago there was a situation in my life that seemed like a sharp left turn. It was a great opportunity to sink in fear and doubt but before I had time to do that, I stepped out of the stormy room and Jesus said, “You just got out of the boat!” I have to tell you that put a smile on my face and skip in my step. That moment has often been a monument that I go to for a reminder to trust.
We all have memorable moments with Him that we can turn to. Just do not get caught up in remembering the failures; rather remember the way the Lord lifted you up. It does very little good to rehearse the curse. Yes people feared. Yes Peter sank. But God lifted Him!
If we get caught up in wondering, it will take us wandering! Wondering what God is up to takes our focus off of God and unto things. Wondering how God is going to fix things makes us good targets for wrong answers. For instance, people get caught up in what day the Lord will return, and suddenly they have the answer. That is when they should wonder why they have an answer that Jesus said He did not have!
Just trust. I do not know all the answers. I trust that God does. This does not mean that my mind does not wander. Last night, my bride and I watched the end of a series that ended before the writer was ready for it to end, so we were left speculating what happened. I went to bed still thinking about it. But then I remembered a great answer. It really does not matter! Really!
In the grand scope of things, nothing but the will and way and love of God really matters. It seems cold. It is not something that you can tell everyone; at least not as a first response, but ultimately it is the best way to go on. God knows. He knows our needs, our hurts, our gifts, our desires and everything else. He welcomes us to bring them all to Him just not to make them the most important thing. Trusting God is the most important thing.
