KEEP BUILDING
Now I will rescue you and make you both a symbol and a source of blessing! So don't be afraid or discouraged, but instead get on with rebuilding the Temple. (Zechariah 8:13 NLT)
Have you ever been through a hard time? I think it is safe to say that we have all been in the place a time or two where it just seemed like everything went wrong. When things get this way we have a tendency to perpetuate the problems. We plan for the next bad thing! We say lots of things that pretty much predict the next wreck.
Israel had been in a state like this for a while when Zechariah received this word from the Lord. God said how much He loved them. He also acknowledged that they had become a symbol of what it was to be cursed. But now God said it was all going to change. He told them to get on with what they were supposed to be doing and expect God to do what He promised.
The Bible says that we were all born under a curse, but Jesus removed that curse. We have the same promises that Israel received. We are God’s children of promise. So God says to get on with building these temples.
In order to do that we need to speak the truth. We need to say what God says and plan for God’s plans. We need to recognize that we really cannot do anything without Jesus and be sure to call Him quickly in every circumstance. When we fail to do what we know we should, be can’t sit around feeling sorry for ourselves and allowing ourselves to deteriorate, we need to get on with the building.
There are times when it truly seems impossible, and for us it is. But it is as easy as can be for God. We can be sure that God will do what He says He will do. He has made up His mind to be our God. It is up to us to dwell in the secret place with Him. It is up to us to abide under His shadow.
He told them not to be afraid because He would not change His mind about blessing them. He says the same to us. He paid the ultimate price to rescue us. He certainly is not going to change his mind about blessing us. Then God told them what they must do.
First He said they were to tell the truth to each other and be just with one another. They were to be sure not to make evil plots to harm one another, and quit swearing to things that were false. All of these things were things that would build and not tear down.
It seems that all of it also involved the words they would speak. No doubt there were those who doubted what God told Zechariah. Well someone needed to encourage those who doubted that what God said was true. They were to plan for justice for every one and speak things to bless and not to harm one another. If we practice these things in our lives we will see our temples make great progress. The key is to keep building up and refuse to tear down.
