KEEP HOPING

Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping. (Romans 4:18a NLT)

If you cannot think of any reason to keep hope alive, do it because God likes it! Yes it is true; God loves it when we believe Him even in unbelievable circumstances. If you are at all familiar with the Bible, you know the story of Abraham. You know how he was looking for the true God and God spoke to Him. You also know that God did not just say, “Hi.” God gave him a big opportunity right out of the chute so to speak. He told him to leave where He was and go find the place God had for him. Abraham was so impressed with God that he packed up and went, without knowing for sure where he was going. He believed God and God counted it as righteousness. It was the right thing to do.

We also know that Abraham did not necessarily do everything perfectly, but everything He did was done in pursuit of the promises of God. Abraham developed a relationship with God and this pleased God. There was one little thing that Abraham really wanted, and that was a child of his own, so he asked God and God told him he would have many children. This excited Abraham. So even though Sarah, his wife, was skeptical, Abraham believed God. In fact, he talked about it so much that his wife suggested he take her servant girl! This was a bad idea, but it did prove that Abraham was still capable! Many more years passed before God told Abraham that the child of promise was still on the way. Abraham never flinched. Sarah laughed at the thought that she an old woman would still have a child. After all, she thought it was impossible before, that was why she gave Abraham her servant girl. This was a move she lived to regret by the way!

In all of this, God liked the fact that Abraham kept his eyes on Him. God was pleased that Abraham kept hoping and following Him. Even when there was no natural reason to keep hoping, Abraham would not let go. He did not let go, because he was convinced that God made everything and that He could still do everything. Verse 20 tells us that his faith grew even stronger. How can that be? Well I think it is because Abraham found a key in His relationship with God, and that is that the more impossible it looks, the greater the result will be. God is a big result God!

Hope builds faith. Hope gives strength. If we let go of our hope, we become weak and helpless. When we become weak, we have no strength to walk by faith. If Abraham had not kept hoping, he would have stopped trying. God kept encouraging him because His desire was to give Abraham his heart’s desire.

God feels the same way about all who believe Him. Never allow yourself to doubt. Keep hoping. Keep believing. Keep standing. God cannot fail. If we can believe, all things are possible with God. In these troubled times, we can be sure that those who keep their hope in God will do exploits in His name. As they say, “We ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Be still and know that He is God. That will keep hope alive for you and for those around you!
