LEAST LIKELY

God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for Him. (Matthew 5:3 NLT)

Last night, I went to the piano to pray and as I prayed, the words, “The least likely are the most likely to stay.”

After 40 years I continue to be in awe of God for rescuing me. I know the theological why of it. I get that God so loved the world that Jesus came for us. When I was a kid in church we would sing “Love Lifted Me!” I did not get it then, but now I am still so grateful and so amazed, and it still thrills me to consider the way He rescued me.

I was praying(singing) to Him about it when these words struck my heart and the thought has been rolling through my head, gathering momentum as it goes.

Paul pointed out that he was least of all. I mean really, he was so bound by religion that he thought he was doing God a favor by arresting and eliminating the people who believed in Jesus. Then the truth set him free.

Least likely people are everywhere. Churches have people who do not really see their need for God. Don’t get mad. You know it is true. It could be you.

A friend and I were discussing recently the fact that we never doubted that God existed; we just had no real need for him. He and I had met at a gas station many years ago. We were both new to the kingdom of God and amazed at the newness of life. We were both thankful that we had found the need for God.

The greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all my heart. I never did that before He came and found the least likely. As the song says, I was sinking deep in sin, sinking to rise no more. I had no need for God. I had my way, and it was good enough for me. No, it wasn’t!

Do you ever think about how great God is? Is He the first one you credit with all that is added to you? Is He the first one to turn to in good times and in bad? Do you need Him?

It is important to consider our ways! I am not talking about our lives and the way we live them as much as I am talking about our hearts toward God! Actually, the way we live is a reflection of our hearts toward God, but He will take care of the little things when we get the biggest thing in line!

If we love God, we will show God! It grieves me when I fail to reflect Him. Fortunately, God does not waterboard us. What I mean is, He does not pull us out of the raging sea of life and then dunk us when we do not get it right and let us up when we gasp for Him. He is consistently God. So even when we are not so consistent, He is faithful. So, it seems that the least likely are the most likely to cling to Him. Once we see our need for Him and we come to love Him it sticks because those who are forgiven most, love most. So, as God once asked Adam, where are you?
