LEAVE IT ALONE

But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, "Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you."(John 5:14 NLT)

I do not know what this man was doing, but the fact is that he had been healed and Jesus made a point of telling him to move on with his life or something worse might happen. I don’t believe Jesus was threatening him, He was just pointing out that he now had a new life and he should go and live it for God. Jesus says the same to us.

I see this scripture as an important reminder that once we have been set free, healed, forgiven or extended forgiveness, we need to leave well enough alone and press toward that mark for the prize of the high call of God in Christ Jesus. We need to do as Paul said and forget what is behind us and be determined that nothing ahead will derail us either.

The only way that our past can plague us is if we refuse to leave it alone. People say that they have forgiven but for some reason it keeps coming back. Well if it does, leave it alone. Don’t pick it up and examine it. Don’t rehearse it all over again. Just leave it alone. If we see a doggie pile we know to stay clear of it. We would tell a little child to just leave it alone. I think you get the picture.

The same is true for the present and our plans for the future. If something comes up that we see as a problem. Let it go and then leave it alone. Of course there are some things that we really can and must do something about, like our wrong words and actions. But let’s face it there are some things we need to just let go. And once they are gone, remember to leave them alone!

Have you ever handled a situation really well? And then someone or something comes up and starts you thinking about it again. Before you know it, your victory slides right down the tube. If you would have just left it alone you would have been stronger for the next battle, but instead you are right back where you started. Fortunately God does not condemn us. He knows we are weak. He picks us up and gives us another opportunity. However, it is a lot more fun to win the first round.

If you don’t understand what God is doing or why things are the way they are, just let them go and leave them alone. Leaving something alone does not mean stuffing it down and doing our best to keep it under control. It does not mean to handle it better. It means to do without it! It means that we get it out and keep it out and if it tries to come around we boot it out all over again. Lets face it; those things never produce any good fruit. They are not pleasant for us or for anyone around us. So our first step to victory is to let it go. In order to maintain our victory we seal it and send it. This applies to habits, hurts, sickness, or anything else that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Leave it alone!
