LIKE A MUSTARD SEED

It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on the earth; but when it is sown it grows up and shoots out large branches, so that birds of the air may nest under its shade. (Mark 4:31-32 NKJ)

It is sometimes hard for me to believe all that I did not believe at one time in my life. When I think of all that was always available and yet I never even paid attention to it, it just makes me shake my head! It also makes me want to shout as I discover more and more of what God’s Kingdom is all about.

Earlier in Mark’s gospel, Jesus said that there was nothing hidden that would not be revealed or kept secret that should not come to light.(4:22) Most of the time, statements like this are used to remind us that our sins will find us out, but the Lord was not talking about sin at the time. He was talking about the word producing a harvest. He was talking about putting a lamp on a stand so the light would shine. Then He said, “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”(4:23)

It is a blessing to actually believe that God is saying anything. This in itself begins as a tiny seed with the very thought that it could be a possibility that God would be interested enough in us to speak to us. On a personal level, I became aware that some thoughts and actions that were not normal for me were taking place. All I could say was that I knew certain things, and was doing other uncharacteristic things. As I studied the Word of God more and more it occurred to me that perhaps God was speaking to me. It took some time to make such a bold declaration, but ultimately it had to be Him because I could take no credit for the wonderful changes He was making in my life. Wonderful to me at least!

The key to growing was in responding to that tiny seed of thought about what just might be. Had I ignored it, I would have soon lost it. Had I not cultivated it, it never would have grown into anything at all. How sad it would have been for me to end this life and then find out all that I missed. And with that, I have another reason to rejoice.

God’s Word was not intended to be kept a secret. Just as it is intended to light up our lives, it is intended to be shed abroad through our lives. Are we expecting to grow in the Kingdom of God? Are we expecting it to grow up around us? Do we understand that the Kingdom of God is the outgrowth of God? A king’s kingdom is a reflection of the king. If a king is evil, his kingdom will be evil. If a king is prosperous and generous, his kingdom will reflect that. If a king is a warrior, then his kingdom will be mighty.

Well, our King is the King of Kings and His kingdom is everything good! We should declare this and expect it to grow up around us and produce a harvest for all to share in. Can you believe that all things are possible to them that believe? I present this seed to you. You have the book of instructions!
