LIKE THE TEACHER
A student is not greater than the teacher. But the student who works hard will become like the teacher. (Luke 6:40 NLT)
Being more like the teacher takes some effort! It requires that we be doers of what He says and not just hearers. If we hear and do not do, it is like building a house on the sand. If we want a house built on the Rock, we need to hear and do what the teacher says. Like any great teacher, Jesus wanted his students to do even greater things with what He taught them. Well, we are “them!”
Jesus trusted His father. He did not fear. He did not doubt. He did not hesitate to go wherever He was sent or wait when God wanted Him to wait. There was no need to great or too small for Jesus to attend to.
So why should we allow anything to keep us from being like the teacher. He healed every disease. He taught healing and acted on it and many believed because of the miracles that they saw. He sent out his disciples to do the very things they had seen Him do. They showed us that it could be done. The same was true of casting out demons, saving the lost and raising the dead. They were our examples.
Jesus was a giver and Jesus was a receiver. He never hesitated to give and he always received graciously. There were women who followed his ministry and provided for His whole group. When Jesus saw Zacchaeus He invited Himself home for dinner and did not leave when it turned into a large celebration. When Mary dumped expensive oil on Him he declared it a wise thing to do.
It was Jesus who said, “Freely you have received. Freely give.” We can try to spiritualize it all and reduce it to nice ideas and only words, but how will that accomplish all that Jesus commands us to do. Whatever Jesus needed, He asked God to help Him get it. He told us we need to ask in order to receive.
Jesus never had to hoard anything, because He understood the flow of the Kingdom of God. He understood acting and He understood waiting. Jesus understood the idea of “just the right time!”
I think we are at just the right time to enter more completely into the joy of the Lord as we gain greater understanding and become “like the teacher.”
