LIMITED OR UNLIMITED

For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son. (John 3:16)

I am led to talk about limits today, because as read the word checked my heart. I thought about the love of God and how it is unlimited. He gave His only son! He tells us that His love is shed abroad by the Holy Spirit Who He gives to us. That means that He has put His kind of love in us. Paul tells us that we should all know His love even though it is so great we will never comprehend the whole of it!

Seriously, all we need to do is consider it and we realize that we only know a little. What we do know is that we are loved, and since we don’t know real love until we know Him, it is sometimes too much and other times too little, depending on where our heads are when we hear about it.

So, here was my dilemma today. God gives me unlimited love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control and a multitude of other things. His plan is that I disperse these things the same way He does. It causes me to stop and pray and ask His forgiveness for the limits I put on these things. God is no respecter of people, but I know there are times when I limit the flow. At times I do not realize it right away, but I know I do.

God gives to me without limits and my attitude or my preference, or whatever it might be gets in the way of the joy He has planned for me when I don’t do that. So, help me with that God!

Let’s face it, we really like the idea that God will supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory. We all want unlimited favor. We love the incoming, but the flow is limited to what we prefer.

I can’t overlook the fact that the love God gives us, will also limit us in other ways. When I was lost, I found that the harder I partied, the less I was limited by what was right or wrong. I found that the love of God on the other hand changed that. It limited a multitude of things that were out of control. It was a good thing. No, it was a great thing. And of course, knowing Jesus took limits off in other good areas!

But the deal is, I keep seeing places that have a great amount of room for improvement. God is a tough example to measure by, but He is the only one that counts. I understand completely that He only points these things out to take me deeper into His kingdom. He is not condemning me. I see it as a great favor that He knows I am ready to look at these things.

Sometimes though, it is like putting on my washed jeans. They still fit, but they need to stretch and relax a little bit. So, consider with me how your limits are affected by God. The easy test comes to me with children. Do I prefer my own? Absolutely. Is that ok? I hope so. Will I adjust if God wants me to? I absolutely think so. Have I failed in that area? More than likely.

As we look to the celebration of the birth of our savior, Let’s consider how unlimited God’s love for us is and make sure we do not limit what He wants to do in and through our lives. As Jesus was in this world, so are we. At least we are moving in that direction.
