LISTEN

Keep silence before Me O coastlands, and let the people renew their strength! (Is. 41:1 NKJ)

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and wondered if they heard a single word you said? Have you ever felt the need to say, “Would you please listen to me?” Have you ever thought that you made what you expected perfectly clear, only to have someone do the opposite and then say they must have misunderstood what you meant? More than likely you are thinking, “I sure have!” Well, if so, just try and imagine how often God has felt this way.

As I began reading this chapter in Isaiah again two thoughts kept repeating in my heart; listen and I will help. In Isaiah chapter 41 God tells us many times how He will help us. Isaiah chapter 40 ends telling us how God will renew our strength. The next thing he says is, “Would you please pay attention to what I am saying?”(my paraphrase)

God has written us a very long love letter. In it He warns us of all the distractions in life and how to overcome them. He promises us abundant life and gives very clear instructions on how to obtain it.

He makes it clear that there will be some hills to level, some rough paths to smooth, and some mazes to figure out along the way, but He also gives us all the equipment necessary to get it done. Oh yes, there are also some dry and arid places along the way, but He tells us that there will be water available. We need only to trust Him and we will see Him keep all of His promises.

He has even kindly written to us showing us how is very possible to for people to enjoy all of His benefits and still get tripped up. This is so we won’t make the same mistakes. He has also shown us that even if we make those same mistakes, we need not give up because His mercy endures forever. So, we can learn the hard way or we can learn the easier way. We simply need to learn to listen.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t think you hear anything. Part of listening is waiting until you do hear something. There is nothing wrong with silence! Sometimes silence is like a gift. There is such peace in silence. Then as we wait, refreshing can come without a word. By faith, we know this is true.

Those who wait upon the Lord can be sure their strength will be renewed. He is worth waiting for. There is no doubt that one word from God can change your life. If you need a change, wait for that word. Are you tired or weary? Are you confused or offended? Do you have any needs? Would you just love to have some peace? If so, I have a great word for you. Listen in silence before the Lord! He will renew your strength.
