LIVE WISELY
Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and effective so that you will have the right answer for everyone. (Colossians 4:5&6 NLT)
Does live wisely mean that we should live looking like a holy man? Does it mean we go around looking like we are always in deep communion with God so that people will see how wise we are? I really don’t think that is what it means and I am sure you don’t either. Still, I think we all may be guilty of missing the simplicity of what this scripture is proposing.
So what does in mean? Well, as Christians we know that true wisdom comes from God. Therefore, it makes sense that we should live according the wisdom and direction He gives us. Isn’t that exactly what Jesus did? He simply did what the Father showed Him and said what He heard the Father tell Him. And didn’t Jesus also tell us that He was the way and that we should walk the way He walked?
Jesus lived wisely! Jesus went about doing good and miracles followed Him. When He needed something, He asked the Father. When He met a demon, He commanded to leave. When He ran into sickness, He took authority over it. He enjoyed His life and lived wisely.
So how do we live wisely? I believe that we simply need to live like people who know God. We need to live like we are certain that He cares for us. When we are certain that he cares, then we will be people who look at everything as an opportunity for to God to reveal how much He cares. When we are sure that He cares for us, we will not hesitate to encourage others that He cares for them. Consequently, our conversation will be gracious and confident and we will most certainly have the right answer at all times. That answer of course is Jesus.
The same would be true concerning all areas of life. If we have confidence according to the word of God that He hears us when we pray, then living wisely is living calling on God. Not with some fake appearance of Holiness, but rather with a gracious walk of confidence. Not as arrogant people who know everything, but as gracious people who know the One who does know everything.
Read the third Chapter of Colossians and you will see a great outline for living wisely, beginning with setting your sights on the realities of heaven. Not a place far off, but a place that is surrounding you. Life gives us opportunities every day. If we live wisely, we will use those opportunities to allow God to reveal Himself to us and to those around us. I believe we can all do this, and as we do we will be planting and watering and God will be giving increase and we probably will not even realize it all until we get to heaven.
