LOOK FOR THE BROOK
"If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." (John 4:10 NKJV)
Jesus clearly told the woman at the well that He possessed living water and that it was hers for the asking. We also know that we are promised that we can be full to overflowing with that same living water. The woman did not fully understand what Jesus was saying, but she was wise enough to desire that kind of water. Over the years, we have come to understand more about that living water; the question is are we partaking of it and walking out our understanding or just understanding more?
The psalmist asked the Lord to show him His ways and teach him His paths. In other words, it makes a point that just knowing the way is not sufficient; we must follow the path as well. So it is with all of the word of God, we must be determined to grow and go in the Word of God.
Looking back at the prophet Elijah, we see the time when he was called upon by the Lord to deliver a word to Ahab telling him that the rain would cease until Elijah said differently. Then the Lord told him to go and hide by the Brook Cherith. Elijah did exactly what the Lord said, and not only did he find water there, he also was fed by the ravens. From there the Lord sent him to have a starving widow feed him. During this time the Lord provided some pretty amazing miracles as well. From there Elijah ended up going and defeating the prophets of Baal, running from Jezebel, and being fed by an angel of the Lord. You can read many more things concerning this period of time in 1 Kings, chapters 17-19.
The thing that stands out to me is that this series of miracles began with a word from God and an act of obedience by Elijah. He looked for the brook. When He found it, did it look like a great deal? Would you like to be fed by ravens? No doubt as the drought set in it seemed better all the time! Then suddenly the Lord tells him to go to a starving widow. Just when he is getting to enjoy this, God changes things. But again it worked out well. Things always work out well when we follow the Lord.
Did Elijah imagine when he was being fed by the ravens that he would soon be experiencing such a victory against the prophets of Baal? I doubt it. But there he was basking in the victory when Jezebel threatens him and he has had enough. This time he was fed by an angel and not a raven.
The point I want to make, is that Elijah could have just sat down in the sand and died in the drought. What good would a brook be without rain? It might be okay for a while, but how could it last. He could have wondered how he would survive without food. In troublesome times, we can take on the worries of the world’s economy, or we can look for the brook. We have Jesus promise that He is living water. He is our brook. He cannot fail. So where will we look when things do not look good? God is always good.
