LOOKING BACK
All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. (Matthew 26:31 NKJ)
I recently asked someone what they thought they might have done on the night that Jesus was betrayed. They quickly assured me that they never would have scattered. I asked if they were sure and we discussed what Peter had said and done and the fact that all the disciples did scatter even after being warned that they would.
Having just talked about clinging to Jesus, I felt like we should look back and consider how we can keep from scattering like the disciples did. Of course as we do this, we will need to consider the times that we have actually betrayed our faith. For most certainly we all have at one time or another.
It is only in facing these things that we can learn to shore up those weak spots in our walls. After all, it is easy to look at the disciples and question how they could possibly run away after all that they had witnessed in their time traveling and ministering with Jesus. But then we need to look into the mirror and realize that they only had a promise that He would rise from the dead. We on the other hand have proof that He did.
So how is it that we can deny Him? Oh but we say, “I would never deny Him!” Don’t we in fact deny Him when we doubt? When He promises us one thing and we say another aren’t we showing that we don’t really know Him as well as we should? When He says He has given us peace and we say we have no peace; what are we saying?
We can make excuses for ourselves. We can say that no one is perfect. Even if we convince ourselves, it does not change the fact that sometimes we are easily scattered. It is only in facing it that we can gain the strength to stop it.
The bottom line is that we need to learn to speak the Word of God. Our words and actions need to be good representations of the Lord Jesus Christ. At one point in Peter’s denial he cursed and swore, knowing that no one would expect one of Jesus followers to do such a thing. Has anyone ever had cause to wonder if you are really a Christian?
Jesus did not stray because He always pleased God by saying what He heard His Father say. It is possible for us to do this too. It will take an effort on our part, but the rewards will be huge. After all, the closer we stay the less likely we are to stray!
I am asking the Lord to forgive me for the times I have denied Him by my words or actions or both. I am determined to fight the good fight of faith until I cease to do it. No more excuses! I pray that you will do the same and be blessed beyond measure as you do.
