LOOKING OVER
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44 NKJ)
One day as I was mowing and pulling weeds I came across some clover and to my mind came words to the old song, “I’m looking over a four leaf clover, that I overlooked before.” I remembered how as kids we would lay in the grass and search for a four-leaf clover. When anyone found one they placed it in a book to flatten it and kept it for good luck. I don’t believe I ever found one, but usually when someone did, it was right where someone else was looking, but they had just overlooked it.
I also remember as a kid looking for foul balls at the baseball games. We would tramp through tall grass looking and looking. Often times someone would spot one right by the foot of another person who had overlooked it. Sometimes when we just could not see it, we would lie down in the weeds and roll in order to find the ball.
Some of you may be wondering what this has to do with treasure in a field and the Kingdom of God, while others are probably way ahead of me. You see God’s treasure is real. It is there for everyone who will seek Him. However, we can easily over look it and miss it. A person can be on their way to heaven and still missing the great treasures along the way.
I have to admit, that the reason I never found a four-leaf clover was probably because I never looked all that hard. I really did not see it as something that important! On the other hand, I very seldom quit looking for the baseball until I had found it! I knew it was somewhere, and it was important that it be found.
The truth of God’s Word is a treasure, and when we realize that we should never stop searching! There is no luck ratio to the word of God. It is true and cannot fail! We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! We will never run out of treasure when it comes to God. Even if you have read His word a hundred or a thousand or more times, there are still treasures to be found. Of course if we stop somewhere and think we have found it all, or if we only look for the things we are comfortable with, we will miss a lot!
I wondered about the man who found the treasure and hid it and bought the field. I don’t think God ever intended that we only dig in the one place. I know He never intended that we leave it hidden. I think He wanted us to be like miners who expect the whole field to be full of treasure. I think he wants us to use the treasure we find to acquire the fields around it in order to find those treasures too. I also know He expects us to share it.
Oh my! What have we overlooked? What have we missed? What have we skipped? What has been pointed out to us and we would not pick it up? Lord open the eyes of our understanding so that we will do whatever it takes to discover the treasure you have for us.
