LOVE DEPENDS
"If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go. (Judges 4:8)
There is much we do not know about how this meeting came about, but one thing is for sure, Barak was depending upon the voice of God. Apparently God had spoken this to Barak and Deborah was confirming it for him. It took the word of the prophetess to activate what God had put in his heart. Because of this, Barak did not care if he got any glory; he only cared that the word went with him.
Well today, we have the living Word residing in us. That word that was God and became flesh that was crucified died and was buried and was raised from the dead that ascended into heaven and now lives in our hearts, depended entirely upon His father. Now He dwells in us and His love for God swells in us until we become entirely dependent upon God as well.
We live in a world that depends on a lot of things, and more and more we are being led to believe that it is crazy to depend upon God. We are told that our future depends on decisions that others make. We are depending on foreign oil. The price of one thing depends on another thing and another thing and if we are not careful we will just sit in fear because we really cannot depend on anything anymore.
The good news is that we can depend on God. He does not fail because He cannot fail. Barak really did not know much about loving God, but he did know that as long as God was for Israel in the past, they had been victorious. I am not certain how long he had held the words in his heart that Deborah confirmed and sent him into action, but they most certainly were there growing and growing. Perhaps the Lord had told him a year before or ten years before or only a moment before, the point is that they were there.
Israel had been abused for twenty years by Jabin and his iron chariots and they were sick of it and crying out to God about it. They were so sick of it that there were ten thousand men who were prepared to take on those chariots all they needed was a leader and Barak was the man. But as we have noted, he wanted the word to go with him. Something happened in him when his call was confirmed. Nothing else mattered now except getting the job done.
This is what happens we throw everything else aside and simply depend on God. We cannot do this until our love for Him enables us to recklessly abandon everything else. This opens the door for us to receive even those promises that seem impossible. Are there some iron chariots that have held you back? Well it is time to attack. Hasn’t the Lord said that He has given you the victory? Trust Him and go get it.
