LOW FUEL

But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away.(Mark 4:6)

Previously when we spoke of the depth of faith and how it determines the height of our flight, I mentioned running out of fuel in an air plane. No doubt you have come up with many other thoughts on your own concerning flying and faith. One friend wrote and spoke of how once the plane is above the clouds and storms it is such a smooth and beautiful flight. It is true, the higher we are the easier it is fly. It is also true that we need to keep our tanks topped off at all times, or we can still lose power.

Therefore, it is important to maintain our edge. We need to be wise and keep a check on our source. Most people involved in flying will say that there is no excuse for running out of fuel. No doubt there are things that can come up, but a person should plan to have extra fuel, rather than barely enough fuel. Sadly, I think that many times we as Christians fail to really even consider the need for fuel. As a result we are often found in heaps on the ground waiting for God to repair us.

Of course, the deeper our roots go and our faith grows, our love for God grows and we are much less likely to find ourselves running out of fuel. If we were to compare ground transportation and air transportation, everyone would agree that fuel is much more important for air transportation. After all if you run out of gas in your car, all you do is pull to the side of road. In the air on the other hand you don’t pull over, you come crashing down. So in the natural realm, if you run out of gas you rest. In Spiritual realm if you run out of gas you are more likely to crash.

I know from experience that it is not a lot of fun to run out of gas in a vehicle. I did it many times thinking that I could get to the next station before I had to stop. It is never convenient, but seldom life threatening. You can tell since I did it more than once that I did not get all that concerned about it. However, it only took one experience of running out of fuel in an airplane to convince me to always be aware of the need for an adequate fuel supply.

One thing we can count on with God is that we can always refuel. Even if we have lost power and are headed down, we can refuel. The problem is sometimes we do not even recognize that we are empty. If we have no depth to our faith, we can encounter spiritual vertigo and fool ourselves into thinking we are still headed up when in fact a crash is inevitable.

That is just one reason why God emphasizes the need for us to keep tabs on our faith and to stay strong the Lord and the power of His might. If we keep the tanks topped off we will not fall do to a lack of fuel.
