MAKE THE EFFORT

We want you to be willing and eager to show your love like that the rest of your life. Then you will be sure to get what you hope for. We don't want you to be lazy. We want you to be like those who, because of their faith and patience, will get what God has promised. (Heb. 6:11-12)

Is it a sin to not go to church or fellowship with others? No, I don’t think so. Will a person who does not go find it easier and be more likely to sin because they do not. I absolutely believe this to be true. Why? Because without fellowship a person can stay away from the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and without His presence our powers of rationalization can flourish uninhibited.

Everything concerning faith requires the effort to apply it to our lives. When Jesus was going to the house of the young girl who had died, he commanded the father not to fear and keep believing. It takes an effort not to fear. The thing is we do not have the power in and of ourselves not to fear. We must choose not to, and then immediately believe. Then faith and belief will displace the fear.

This same principle applies to sin as well. When Paul spoke of the sin that was still in him, he asked how will I ever overcome this. He then answered that he thanked God because through faith in Jesus Christ he could conquer it.

In order to make an effort, we must have a desire. Time in the presence of God creates and increases our desire for more of Him. Understanding this fact, clarifies why the Holy Spirit continually draws and convicts us of our need for more of Him.

Some people think that if God wants them to desire Him then He will cause it to happen, but the truth is He presents the opportunity, but then waits for us to initiate the relationship. I agree it would be nice if He just forced us into everything, but then again we would not like it.

It is true that the more we seek Him the more we find Him. We can certainly ask Him to help us increase our faith. I used to think that perhaps it was wrong for me to ask God to help me love Him more, but I have decided He probably does not mind that at all. If I present myself to Him as a vessel to honor and love Him, who better to prepare me properly? I want a life changing audience with Him every moment of every day.

So, are we willing to and eager to be what God has called us to be? Is it our desire to be sin free and free from sin. Do we desire to be what Jesus said we are? He said, “You are the light of the world.”

There is no effort we could ever make that will be as fruitful as seeking Him and His Kingdom. Sin is always seeking to keep us out, but God’s grace is more than sufficient to give us the victory.
