MAY GOD BLESS YOU
Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him.(Genesis 28:1 NKJ)
A lot of thoughts go through my mind as I read this passage in the Bible. Why? You may ask. Well, because first I take into account that this blessing comes after Jacob had fooled his father by pretending to be Esau. Challenges me to be as forgiving as a father! But that is another devotion.
One thing I considered was the fact that Jacob wanted the blessing. Previously he had desired the birthright, and received it for a bowl of soup. I wonder if Isaac new the story of how easily Esau gave up his birthright. Isaac was the child of promise. He was not his fathers oldest son, but he still received the birthright. I am sure it was very precious to him. So perhaps he was a little disappointed in Esau over that.
Another thing that runs through my mind, is that we should all be so determined to be blessed of God. Salvation is a promise to all who will call upon the Name of Jesus, but there are blessings that we need to go after.
I am not condoning the cheating that Jacob did. Actually I am not sure how or why God did. It does look to me, like Esau could care less about anyone but himself. He married women that his parents did not approve of, soup was more important than birthright, and after Jacob stole his blessing, he went and married against his fathers wishes again.
We need to realize that what is given to us by God, we must hold on to. We should not just take it lightly, and certainly we should not just give it up on a whim. We should also go after the promises of God and wrestle for them as Jacob did if we have to.
Jacob went from being a cheat to being a prince with God when he struggled with God and said he would not let go until he received a blessing. The greatest blessing of all, is God’s presence in our lives. Nothing else really matters. We just have to quit taking His presence for granted. The things that God promises are not just automatic. We can not just hang around and expect things to go the way we want them.
We have to fight the good fight of faith, press toward the mark for the prize, and keep a strong hold on our birthright. When Jacob did all he could do in order to get the blessing of God, he was greatly rewarded. We do not have to cheat to get ours. We need only to ask, seek, and knock. May God bless you as you desire a blessing.
