MERCY AND GRACE

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16 NKJ)

Do you ever see yourself as desperate? Perhaps it would better to ask if you realize just how much you need God? I discovered recently it is a good idea to stop and consider all that God really does for me and to acknowledge how much I really need Him. After all, it is in Him that we live and move and have our being. We owe our every breath to Him. Just try going without air for a while and you will see how desperately you need God.

Of course, if we are Christians we know that we need God. At least we mentally acknowledge the fact. But how desperate are we to see the will of God done? How desperate are we for His presence? Do we see Him as our source of life? Do we feel as though we would die without Him?

This scripture says to come boldly to God where we receive mercy and grace to help in our time of need. The blind man cried out to Jesus asking Him to have mercy on him and he was made whole. Wow! I certainly want that kind of mercy, don’t you? When a person is needy they do not have time to wait outside for help, and it is nice to know that God does not want us to wait in line. The perfect time to come is when we see ourselves as needy and at that point we need to come boldly. We need to throw ourselves at His feet and worship Him and tell Him just how much we need Him. The key is that we need Him. This is what the blind man needed. He needed to get to Jesus. He did not cry out and ask Jesus to heal him, He cried for mercy. He was letting Jesus know that He just wanted to get near Him. So he boldly cried out and as a result Jesus gave Him what he needed.

This scripture also points out that we will find grace to help us in our time of need. I once heard grace described as the empowering presence of God that enables us to be what God has called us to be and do what God has called us to do. One thing God has called us to be is over comers in this life. His grace is grace that helps us. It is not just pat on the shoulder with orders to keep on struggling. So many people have assumed that when God told Paul that His grace was sufficient that God meant that he should just endure the thorn that troubled him. Maybe that is so, but I prefer to think that God was telling him that His grace was up to the challenge and not to give up on the victory.

Personally, I would not be excited about heading to the throne of God if I knew that every time I went He was going to tell me to hang in there rather than giving me the help I need. Don’t get me wrong. There are times when God simply gives us extra strength as our help. He knows best. But still it is help and it changes us. We should always leave His presence different from when we went in. The beginning of getting help is the realization of just how helpless we are without Him, and how desperate we are for Him. May God open our eyes to see this.
