MESSY ME

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts. (1John 5:21

As my Bible reading plan races to the end, I am reminded that in the end, God is going to clean up all the messes! It is going to be a messy and scarry process, but it will be finished.

John gives us a great idea. He says to keep away from anything that might take God’s place in our heart. Anytime that we displace God, it gets messy.  He keeps us in perfect balance, but a little change changes everything. That does mean we are always teetering on destruction, it just means we get messy, and we do not want to stay that way.

You know what it is like when you get dizzy? You don’t want to stay dizzy! It gets your attention and you stop until it goes. We don’t like being dizzy!

Revelation 3:19 warns us to turn from our indifference. We don’t want to be indifferent when it comes to what God says. We don’t want to just leave the mess.

We are at that time of year when people begin to make plans for changes in the new year. I have decided that I don’t want to be so messy. That may or may not include my office area! I am talking about being spiritually messy.

If we are honest, we all get messy. None of us gets it perfect. We have the perfect one living inside us, but we can get complacent. We can have moments of indifference. We can be selfish. We can pitch fits. We can have moments of spiritual dizziness! It is in those moments that messes happen.

In heaven they continually cry, “Holy! Holy! Holy!” They say, “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” We will join them one day.

Keeping such thoughts on our minds can go a long way to quickly cleaning up messes and avoiding many of them all together! Paul reminded us that a big help for him was counting everything else worthless compared to knowing God.

I know that I know Jesus. I know that Jesus knows me and that He loves me. I just want to know Him more, because I know there is always more. And the fact that I make messes makes that obvious to me.

Sadly, I can live with a messy office, but don’t like a messy me. I don’t like wrong thinking or bad attitudes in me. I don’t like that they last longer than they should. I don’t want them to even get a space to sit. So, I have a goal. Don’t make messes. Don’t leave messes. Avoid messes. Recognize messes in the making. Stop when I am dizzy and catch my balance.

Messes are everywhere. Lord give me increased mess awareness. Help me not to be indifferent. Lord, I really do want to be like you. You never made a mess! My hope is in you. Without you, I can do nothing. May all of our lives be mess free! Hope to See you all next year!
