MIRACLES
But in spite of this, the people kept on sinning. They refused to believe in His miracles.
(Psalm 78:32 NLT)
It is really easy to read something like this and think how silly it was for Israel to forget God’s miracles. After all, many of them had experienced the miracles themselves or heard them first hand from someone in their family that had. Still, for some reason no matter what God did for them one day, it just was not enough to take care of the next problem. Sad to say that when I look at this way, I see myself acting the same way at times.
It also amazes me how often we hear people declaring this or that as a miracle, and at the same time refusing to see it as God’s miracle. People speak of the miracle of life, and yet deny the God who created all life. The world prefers not to believe that in the beginning God said.
Of course it is no surprise that they doubt, when in fact people in the church question how it all came about. I don’t see how we can consider ourselves Christians if we will not believe Christ. In the gospels, Jesus tells us over and over that we need only to believe Him.
I know some will say that God does not mind if we ask Him questions, and I agree with that, but there is a difference in asking Him questions and questioning what He says. For instance, Jesus told the disciples that in a little while the world would no longer see Him, but they would. I used to think that He was just talking about the fact that they would see Him after He rose from the dead. But today I saw it in a different light. He was telling them that because they believed they would continue to see Him everywhere they went.
They would see Him because they would recognize Him in the miracles that He would continue to perform through them. Every time they saw a miracle they would know Jesus was at work. Remember Peter and John? They said it was Jesus and faith in His name that healed the crippled man. The miracles reveal Jesus. Jesus told the religious leaders that if they would not believe what He said, they should believe what they saw. He was telling them to believe the miracles.
I believe He is telling us the same thing today. He wants us to believe for miracles and then to believe them when they happen. In other words, the believing is what starts the miracle. God watches over His word to perform it. If we don’t believe the miracles, we won’t believe for more miracles. Without the miracles, we expect the world to believe in an idea rather than an almighty God. Many people see faith in God as just another way to cope with life, when the truth is He is life. Expect miracles and believe them. Most importantly give all glory and praise to God for all of His miracles: past, present, and future.
