MOAB SPIRIT

And they went along through the wilderness and bypassed the land of...Moab(Judges 11:18)

I do not profess to know when time will run out for the world as we know it, but just looking at things, one has to think that the Lord is surely getting ready to come. Whether it is tomorrow or a thousand years from now, we must be determined to do two things. We must draw closer to our Lord, and desire that others are drawn to Him because of it. There are lots of other things as well, but they will more than likely be done if we at least focus on these two things.

As we watch in awe, God is doing a lot in the world. Some of it seems to be strange, but then a lot of what God has always done has seemed strange to me. Like why would He die so I could live. There certainly is a river flowing, and it seems to me, that the best thing to do is get in it. On the other hand, there are always differing opinions when God begins to move, and so in effect the river divides. Some stand on one side and others stand the other. Funny thing is, while people stand on one side or the other, the river keeps flowing and it is the ones who just get in that are carried along. Personally, I want to be in the river and trust God to carry me along. So what does this have to do with Moab.

Well, you remember from reading in Numbers and Judges that Moab would not allow Israel to pass through their land. Not only that, but Moab was so frightened after seeing God defeat Israel’s enemies that they went to find someone (Balaam) to curse them. God would not allow that, so then they took Balaam’s advice and managed to work their way into the camp by marrying the Israelites, and undermining them that way. Ultimately because of this, the Lord’s plans for Moab were not good.

I think we need to be careful that we do not get infected with a moabite spirit. Now this is not some new principality that I am drumming up here, I am simply using what they did as an illustration of what we could get caught in.

First, Moab witnessed the power of God, but did not trust Israel and so would not let them pass through their land. So often, people refuse to let God move in their midst. We can trust Him, why not let Him pass through. A little time with Him, and we will welcome Him to stay!

As if it was not bad enough that they would not let them pass through, they tried to find a way to curse them. I read a lot of reports of people trying to curse the move of God. There are always some things that we may question, but we need to careful that we are not found guilty of resisting God. God would not let Balaam curse Israel, and He will not let His move be stopped. Unless of course the people themselves decide to quench it.

Which is the next thing to be ware of. When Moab could not stop Israel, and Balaam could not curse them, he suggested that they marry into the family. Which we all know was against what the Lord wanted of them. Israel allowed themselves to be compromised by unbelievers and it hurt them. It was worse for Moab, but it was bad for them. We need to be careful as well, that we do not quench the spirit of God in our midst.

So, for our part, I suggest that we invite God to move in our midst and change our lives. We must be careful to guard our hearts, and not be compromised. The spirit of Lord is what we all desire.
