MORE THAN A VOICE
And he said, "Please show me your glory." (Ex.33: 18 NKJ)
Whenever I think I might presume too much on God, all I need to do is go back and take a look at Moses. There was a guy who had no problem talking to, questioning, or making requests of God. Moses knew God first as a voice from a burning bush! How many of us would talk to a burning bush? If we did, how widely would we broadcast the encounter? No wonder God liked Moses so much!
Here, we come to the time when Moses wanted more than a voice. He had witnessed great miracles, and talked with God many times, but for some reason he just wanted to see more, so he asked God to show him His glory. God did not tell him no. He told Moses that He would let Moses see as much as he could and still live.
As I considered Romans chapter 8 verse 30 where we were promised Jesus’ glory, I was reminded of this time when God allowed Moses to glimpse His glory. As you read Genesis 33:12 through 22, it is inspiring to see how comfortable Moses was with God. Even more importantly it is such a blessing to see that God had no problem with Moses wanting to see and know more. In fact, God informed Moses that He would be happy to oblige him in his request because Moses had found favor with God and he was God’s friend. Oh how I desire to be God’s friend!
So here we have Moses who hears God’s voice and wants more. God hides him in the cleft of a rock and shades him so he is not destroyed and then allows him a glimpse of His glory. There is no doubt that this is impressive. Now we fast forward and here comes John as a “voice” crying in the wilderness making a way for the Lord. Jesus is the promised Rock that God shelters us all in and protects us by His mighty hand. God goes beyond a glimpse of His glory and sends Jesus in a body that can be seen by man without it destroying him. And now everyone who receives Him, who is the fullness of the God in a body, can live, but anyone who refuses to see and receive Him will perish! Wow! What a turn around that is! Are we blessed or what?
We most certainly have a new a better covenant with God. We are not only allowed to glimpse His glory, we are called to receive it. We must receive it in greater and greater measure so that we can truly be lights in this world. Jesus never intended for us to shine our own light, we are to shine the light of His glory.
Therefore we must, like Moses, approach God with boldness and ask for an increase of His presence. It may be that there are things that we need to do. We may need to hide ourselves away more with Jesus. What ever is required, it is worth the effort. No sickness, no disease, no lack, no part of the curse can stand in light of His glory. Moses asked God to show the whole world that they were His chosen people. How will the world know that we are special and distinct if God does not reveal His favor? He is after all, more than a wonderful voice!
