MOST DID NOT BELIEVE
But despite all the miraculous signs he had done, most of the people did not believe in Him.
(John 12:37 NLT)
I have read this scripture several times lately and every time I find myself dumbfounded as to why they would not believe in Him. Then each time I think it is not so different from today. Most do not believe in Him. Even though we noted recently in the book of Acts that more and more believed, still the sad truth is that most did not.
That being the case, we have the most to be concerned with. That means that there are lots of people to reach. That means that the majority of the people need to see the Light of Jesus shining from us. It also means that we need not get discouraged because someone refuses to believe in Him. Jesus felt badly for the people who would not believe but He never lost sight of what He came to do. He came to seek and to save the lost. He came heal the sick and deliver those who are bound by the devil. He came to declare good news that the Kingdom of Heaven had come. And so He just kept doing it right up to His last breath.
This is the same thing that the early church did. Paul wrote of the importance of just keeping on planting and watering and trusting God to give the increase. Hey, if most of the people would not believe when Jesus Himself was walking the earth and doing every manner of miracle, why should we be surprised when people don’t believe now? I did not always believe, did you? The thing that we need to make sure of is that we send clear signals. We need to make sure that we are consistent in our witness for Him.
Of course it is hard when we want so much for someone to come to the Lord and they just won’t believe, but if we do what God has called us to do, He will give the increase. Also, let’s face it; it is not just unbelievers who refuse to believe from time to time. Have you ever had someone who was your own familiar friend who balked when you started to believe a little more than they were prepared to believe? Have you ever been ill and were trusting God for healing and had someone come and tell you that you were foolish to believe that God still heals people? Have you done this to someone yourself?
Don’t be surprised or discouraged when you run into unbelief. Rather, believe all the more. Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Yes, unbelief is evil. When we see it as evil and as a sin, we will not be tempted to get caught up in it. If you find it hard to believe God for something, don’t enter into unbelief, ask God to help your unbelief. Refuse to doubt. Speak to the mountain and tell it to go away. Do what ever you must to keep from unbelief, because a little bit of unbelief will spread like a wild fire. If the enemy can get you doubt the smallest thing he will then try and cause you to doubt everything.
So don’t be like most. Dare to believe God with all your heart in all things.
