MOST IMPORTANT

... Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.(Luke 10:42 NKJ)

What is most important? Please do not use what I am about to write as an excuse not to read your bibles or pray. Simply use it as an encouragement that will draw you more and more into relationship with Jesus which will actually cause us all to seek Him more.

When Jesus shows up, will you drop what ever else you are doing and go to Him? Does He have that sort of relationship with you and you with Him? What am I talking about, you wonder. Just what I said. Can Jesus call you away from whatever you are doing?

This is what Mary did. She knew her sister would not be happy. She also knew that others who were there might think she should be serving instead of sitting. But for Mary, the important thing was that Jesus was there, and she was not going to miss that. It mattered not what others might think or say, Jesus was most important. Because of this, Jesus praised her.

Did she sit every day waiting for Him to show up. Was every waking hour spent studying the scriptures so as to do the right things. We don’t know for sure about that, but we can assume that the answer is no on both counts. She no doubt thought about all the things she had seen Jesus do. She probably peered out the window from time to time to see what was going on in hopes that He might come to their house again. If she saw people gathering, she might run out to see if anyone had heard any thing. Another thing that Mary probably did was retell the stories of all that she had witnessed of Jesus ministry. Certainly people would come by to see Lazarus and hear the story of how Jesus raised Him from the dead. There were probably those who scoffed at the idea, and I am sure that Mary was quick to set them straight. Most important, however, was the fact that when ever Jesus came He had her complete attention.

So, how do you measure up to the Mary, who chose the good part. Do you from time to time throughout each day consider Jesus. Do you find yourself longing for Him. Do you once in while smile as you remember wonderful things He has done for you and for others. Do you tell people about these things when they ask? Do you give them opportunities to ask. And when Jesus comes near, will you drop everything just to be with Him? Does He know that you are available? Does He feel free to stop in and interrupt your day? If so, then you are probably doing better than you think.

Yes, we should read and pray. But we need to know that Jesus looks on our hearts and at our fruit, not on the time we log. We do not earn His stopping by. He comes where He is welcome. Realizing this will make our prayer and bible study much more enjoyable. It will take the work out of it and we will see how good and rewarding it is.
