NEVER DISAPPOINTED
Yet You are Holy. The praises of Israel surround your throne. Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them. You heard their cries for help and saved them. They put their trust in you and were never disappointed.(Psalm 22:3-5 NLT)
I am not sure what sort of mess David was in when he penned this Psalm. This psalm is also considered to be prophetic of Christ and His crucifixion. Reading it, one would think that God allowed him to voice the kind of things we might think at times, and then the Holy spirit would put in the truth of the matter.. We know that David got himself in fixes from time to time, simply because he ceased to do what God would want. No matter what though, God loved him, just as God loves us.
The truth is that God is Holy and that He cannot fail. David reminds himself that when his ancestors put their trust in Him, he rescued them. He never disappointed them. Were they never disappointed because they were easy to please? Oh I should say not. When you read of the way Israel acted, you wonder why God put up with them. If we are honest, we wonder that about ourselves too. Why does God put up with us. Even more often, we probably wonder why He puts up with the things we spot in others.
Well, fortunately for all of us. He just plain loves us. Still, there are times when we may feel like God has disappointed us. We have all called and feel like He did not answer. We have all had loved ones die or get terribly ill or had plans fail, and we were calling God and it seemed as though He failed to answer. I won’t try and explain that. No one but God can make those times understandable.
So then how can I propose to say that when we trust God we will never be disappointed? The key here is in the word trust. Just because we call on God, does not necessarily mean that we are trusting Him. I called on God a lot of times before I ever even knew Him. I had heard enough about Him to make those desperate pleas for help, accompanied by promises that I never kept. I really believe He answered me on many occasions. I was not putting one little bit of trust in Him, I was just yelling in the darkness. I also never gave Him any praise or glory for His rescues. I never expected any answers, so I was never really disappointed. Not in God anyway.
Once we come to know God, we are more susceptible to disappointment. Why? Well, because we want God to do what we ask. The truth is, we can ask and not trust just the same as we did before we knew Him. When we ask trusting and thanking, then the peace of God keeps our hearts and minds in Christ. Even when we do not get the answer we were shooting for, God helps us to have such peace and understanding that we truly are not disappointed. We may like David, ask God why he has forsaken us. We may have to overcome the temptation to give up. But in the end, we will declare God you have never failed me. You have never disappointed me. And I know you never will. So when we have done all to stand, we will stand a little longer in the full armor of God. Blessed are they who put their trust in the Lord.
