NICE AND NARROW

But the gate that opens the way to true life is narrow. And the road that leads there is hard to follow. Only a few people find it. (Matthew 7:14 ERV)

I hope to share a liberating thought here to help launch us all into a wonderfully Happy New Year. It stands to reason that the gate on a narrow road would in fact lead to a narrow gate. Have you ever considered that more time seems to be spent focusing on the narrow road and the narrow gate than on what the gate opens in to?

Just previous to this statement, Jesus talked about continuing to ask, seek, and knock. He pointed out that the Father has good things for the asking. That is pretty narrow minded to think that we should have to ask, seek, or knock! Or to think that simply asking, seeking, and knocking could actually work. Not many think that way!

Here is what has been passing through my mind. The road is truly narrow. It is a one way road and if you cannot or will not believe that Jesus is the only way, you are on a wrong road. Many people, who actually believe in Jesus as their chosen way, get off on destructive road by making allowances for other roads leading to the same place.

That narrow road leads to a narrow gate. Jesus is the gate. The problem that I see many of us run into is failing to see the kingdom that the gate opens into. Why in the world, once we have chosen God’s narrow way and entered through the gate, do we allow ourselves to be tricked into focusing on the way to hell more than on the greatness of the Kingdom of God.

You know it is true! Almost everyone has done it. We enter the Kingdom and feel free and wonderful and then bam! We get caught up into teetering along like the road got even narrower and we are only one wrong thought from falling right into hell with no way to return.

When we do this, we are so deceived and so robbed of what God really intended. He really wants us to enter the kingdom and enjoy it and by enjoying it we will lead many others to glory.

How often do you really allow yourself to enjoy the Lord? You know if we enjoyed Him more we would think of Him more fondly. No, we do not want to take God for granted, but we surely should take advantage of all of His promises.

Once we were in the mountains and my son fell and tore up his knee. The road out of camping area was narrow and slow going but we stayed on it. Once we got to Interstate 90 we took full advantage of the wide road and the faster speed limit. We did not drive slowly along the shoulder afraid that we would go into the ditch. If we have found the answer and entered through that Jesus gate, we should focus on exploring the Kingdom of God. Make that your goal for the New Year.
