NO TELLING LIES
Then watch your tongue! Keep your lips from telling lies. (Psalm 34:13 NLT)
Do you want to live a life that is long and good? Of course you do. We all want the good life. Well if we want the good life, then we need to speak the truth. Jesus is the truth. He is the way and He is the life. His truth shows the way to the good life. So if we speak anything other than the truth, we are lying.
Do you get what the word of God is saying here? If we are not declaring God’s praises, His greatness, and His faithfulness, then we are lying. That sounds pretty narrow minded doesn’t it? But the truth is that God is great and faithful. If we say He does not take care of us, we are lying. The truth is that when we call Him he answers us. If we know that he hears and that he answers us we have nothing to fear.
The world around us is full of fear. If we agree with them, we are lying. We know the truth and the truth sets us free. Verse 6 says that God hears us and sets us free from all our fears. Verse 7 assures us that the angel of the Lord guards us. Verse 10 tells us that those who trust in the Lord will never lack any good thing. So if we want to live a life that is long and good, all we need to do is speak the truth.
There are lots of people who take exception to the idea that all we need to do is speak the word, but that is nothing new. People have doubted Jesus forever and all He did was speak what the Father said. Even among those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God, the number who actually take His words as the foundation of life are in the minority. Countless numbers would rather stand by and say it can’t be that way without even putting the word to the test.
Verse 8 challenges us to taste and see that the Lord is good. It is evil to think or to say anything that is not according to what God says. If we know what we should say and we do not do it, it is sin. Verse 14 warns us to turn away from evil and do good. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right. We also know that the Lord watches over His word to perform it. Remember, these are all God’s ideas, not mine!
So if we say things that are not as the Lord says, we are lying and we do not know the truth. Before we decide that this is just some sort of positive confession idea, we better look long and hard at the fact that this is what the Lord says. By the way, there is nothing wrong with positive speaking and thinking. Especially when it is based on the word of God.
We should sincerely ask the Lord to set a guard over our mouths so that we will be sure to speak the truth. If we will cooperate with the Spirit of God in this, I believe we will begin to experience His goodness and greater and greater ways, and those around us will benefit as well. Tell the truth. Magnify the Lord. Let us exalt His name together forever.
