NOTHING USELESS
So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and steady, always enthusiastic about the Lord's work, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. (1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT)
I doubt that there is a person anywhere who has not thought, “Oh, what’s the use.” We all run into situations and circumstances where we just want to give up, and to be honest, sometimes it is a good idea to at least let it sit for a bit and try again later.
There is however, an area where we can be sure that it is always good to keep on, and that is when it comes to the Lord’s work. There is never anything that is useless when it is done with the Lord. But talk about a place where the enemy is forever trying to kill our enthusiasm. There is always someone or something trying to convince us that there is no use in calling on, or trusting in God. Someone will pray and not see instant results and the next time they go to pray to about the same thing, the first thought is, “What’s the use.”
That is why is necessary for us to be strong and steady. It takes effort to keep applying the truth of God’s word to every part of our lives. We have to be steady. In other words, we can’t be on and off in our dependence upon Jesus. It is not a once a month, or week, or even once a day life. It is a full time relationship. That is why we must be enthusiastic about the Lord’s work. The New King James says, “always abounding.” I think many have taken this to mean that we always have to be doing a lot. This in itself has discouraged many because they do not think they can do much. Yet the verse ends saying that nothing that is done for the Lord is in vain, or useless.
To work with enthusiasm, speaks to me of excitement and confidence in the Lord Jesus, who we are trusting to accomplish more that we can hope or imagine. It is always wise to call upon the Lord. That is simply the right thing to do no matter what is going on our lives. We Give the Lord praise and honor when we call on Him.
Everything that we do according to God’s word produces fruit. There is no gift too small to give. There is no prayer to small to pray. When the poor woman gave two cents as an offering, and Jesus saw it as a great offering. He can do a lot with whatever we give or do. A small act of kindness can be expanded into the salvation of a soul; a prayer for a missionary can save his or her life, and lead to further expansion of the Kingdom of God.
You see our enthusiasm is for what the Lord can do with even a little. Our confidence is not in our abilities but in His. Don’t allow the enemy to discourage you or to keep you from being faithful to the call of the Lord. Every part is an important part. Each of us has a special gift that we offer to the work of the Lord. What we see as small may just be the most important part. It may be the one thing the Lord has planned as the final touch. So be encouraged. See the things you do as important things and be enthusiastic and expectant of the Lord using what you do. After all, “Nothing you do for the Lord is useless.”
