ONCE DARKNESS
For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light. For this light within you produces only what good and right and true. (Ephesians 5:8-9 NLT)
I was, you were, we all still have the potential for darkness, but Christ has set us free. We are no longer chained to the darkness. We have a choice.
One great stumbling block for people is never recognizing that they were full of darkness. Darkness is obvious in the presence of light, but until we see the light we can comfortably stumble around in darkness.
At my computer, I will often start out without turning on the light. After I strain to look at my keyboard to find a right key, or try to read something out of the Bible I will get up and turn on the light. Today, I remembered to turn on the light right away. What a difference the light makes.
Have you ever asked someone to turn on the light for you so you could see better? This is what the Holy Spirit does for us. He reveals all truth, which produces only what is good and right and true.
You see, if we have never recognized how full of darkness we were, and are unwilling to acknowledge that we still have the potential for darkness we probably have never really seen the light.
I know there was a time when I would comfort myself thinking that I was not as bad as some other people. Rather than looking at what I was doing, I looked at what I considered worse things that I was not doing. And of course, I did some good things too!
All of those tools for comfort worked until I saw Jesus, the Light of the World. He crumbled all of my defenses. He removed scales from my eyes and I saw that I was full of darkness. Even the good things were dark in the light of His presence. My prayer was that He would never let me go back.
Well, the truth is He will let me go back if I want to. Thankfully, Holy Spirit is present to empower me to overcome the darkness. Darkness is always present, but Jesus has rendered it powerless over seekers of light. We need to only remember that we now have light from the Lord and that we can and should live as people of light.
His light produces what is good and right and true. We can surely recognize when darkness comes knocking and refuse to answer the door. The world needs to see the light and you have it. Let Him shine.
