ONE TO WORSHIP

Do not worship any other gods besides me. (Exodus 20:3 NLT)

Have you ever wondered why it is that we can take something that God made so clear and easy to understand and muddle it up until it seems have forgotten what He wanted in the first place? God said do not worship any other god. He has always desired that He be the object of our praise and worship. His plan was that our lives be a continual revelation of our love for Him. After all, that is what He does for us. Each day we experience a continual flow of His love and mercy.

When we talk like this there will always be someone who will say that you can’t just spend your whole day worshipping. That depends on what you call worship. God never intended that we only worship Him on one day for one hour. The truth is if that is all we do, we probably do not worship Him at all. Scripture says that God has created us as instruments of worship. So every note we make, we are worshipping someone or something. Everything we do in life gives worship to the one true God or to another god.

Why do you think that God warns us against destructive words and tells us that every idle word will be taken into account? I believe this is also why when Jesus told the disciples how to pray that that he made sure they asked for forgiveness. Let’s face it we all need forgiveness on a regular basis. Just acknowledging that is an act of worship to God.

Let’s go back to a thought that will help us all. Everything we do or say is an act of worship. What we do or say determines the object of our worship. We are either on the Lord’s side or we are not. When our words or actions do not bring glory to God who do they glorify? Who enjoys it the most when we gossip, criticize, complain, steal, cheat, or hate? No wonder David prayed that God would put a guard over his mouth.

We have a choice every minute of every day as to whom we will worship. God said that we should worship Him. When we gather together for worship that is the place to get filled up and fired up. That is the place to get the eyes of our understanding opened and our focus adjusted.

We certainly do not want to worship any other God than the true God, so it is important that we realize that since our lives are instruments of worship we need to be more attentive to the notes that we blow. A person in an orchestra cannot just decide to play any old note just because he feels like it. If he does, there may be some who do not know the difference, but the director sure will. The same is true for us. God sees all of our lives as acts of worship. He knows that we are slow to understand and even slower to change, but He expects that we love Him enough to press toward that mark of the high call of God.

The other day He told me that if I would just worship Him I could trust Him for everything else. Now I know better what He was talking about. If we worship Him with every note of our lives every good thing will be added to us. I pray that we all will take this very much to heart and that it will cause us to really worship God with all our hearts all the time. Change me Lord.
